Fredric Douglas’ narrative helps to showcase a story of dominance and control in the society. This reminds us of the situation of slavery and how the slaves had no choice in the societies where they lived. It is evident from the story that slave does not know much about the places where they stay and themselves making it easy to have control over them. This control is gained while they are still children. The first section of the story appeals especially because it uses a descriptive language to describe the situation in which the slaves stayed and how they had limited information in the society. This section reveals the pathetic lives of the slaves, and this is responsible for the revelation of emotions in the readers this can initiate a move to end slavery from the reader.

Jacob’s narrative differs from Douglas’ narrative by showing the differences that occurred between the male and the female slaves. As female slaves, Douglas reveals that the ladies were prone to defilement by their male bosses. This meant that most of the slaves could bear children with their bosses. The interesting thing is the fact that these children were also sold into slavery for the benefit of their masters. Moreover, female slaves are subjected to jealousy b the wife of their masters thus they are sold from time to time in case the wife suspects that the husband has some liking for them. The idea of being frequently sold makes the life of the female slave’s miserable unlike for the male slaves who work at the same time for a long time before they can be auctioned.
