The Author’s Main Argument

The main argument of Dalrymple’s is that the world has submitted to evil and there is no way they can escape from it. Political corruption has taken over around the world. The crime of political form was spread by the leaders of different countries including Liberia, Germany, and North Korea. The leaders of these nations were evil and sought corrupt goals which resulted in evil through costing people’s lives. Dalrymple claimed that individuals do not care about their colleagues, but they worry about their issues. Individuals commit evil actions as a result of their excellent, but it hurts their peers. The main reasons that influence people to do evil are the corrupt nature of human beings, politics, and leftist concept.

Evidence and Ancillary Arguments on the Theme

Dalrymple asserted that everybody commits evil, but it depends on its scope. He stated that men do evil concerning the extent that is available. Everyone harms, but few people go beyond others in executing wickedness. The author suggested that people continue doing wicked things in case there is no punishment for their actions. For instance, Adolf Hitler started with little actions of wickedness and went away with them. After some time, he committed the greatest evil in the world history where more than five million Jews lost their lives. Some people carry out wrong actions to prevent consequences of violating their society’s norms. Germans supported the activities of Hitler because failure to practice the evil actions would have endangered their lives. Individuals are self-centered and prefer to conduct wrong things rather than taking into account the lives of their peers.

Evil spreads as a result of intense political beliefs or ties. The citizens follow the desires of their political leaders. In case a politician is interested in conducting wrong actions, the people will have to abide. The views of people on evil are demonstrated through politics because they are free to express their gestures. This can be portrayed through racism because people follow the stand of their leaders. For instance, people discriminated blacks, and when the politicians supported their position, they expressed hatred towards the African-Americans. The political approval on racism led to the formation of Klu Klux Klan which portrays their corrupt activities openly in the community. No one was prohibiting them from carrying out wicked activities because the government was supporting them. Dalrymple claimed that women leave their husbands for them to get support from the government. The state does not restrict wives from their marital homes.

The leftist concept cannot control the illegal activities. Dalrymple makes an emphasis on controlling evil in the community. The author argues that the leftist principle is not effective in controlling bad actions in the society. He illustrates that people believe that the time spent in prison is enough punishment for criminals. The leftist concept provides that the appropriate consequence of criminals is the time they spend in jail. Dalrymple claims that the time in prison is not a guarantee of changing the behaviors of the criminals. People who commit murder should not be given life imprisonment because it will not affect their character. A person’s life cannot be compensated for time in prison. The prisoners do not contribute to the society when they are imprisoned. Individuals carry out activities for their own good rather than for the benefit of the organization. Evil is as a result of selfish actions conducted by people.

Relationship of Human Happiness and Misery to Virtue Ethics in Aristotle’s Theory

Dalrymple claimed that the main difference between misery and human happiness is the decisions made by individuals. He argued that no biological characteristic could make a distinction between depression and unhappiness. The author attested that happiness and misery are recognized as emotional responses to the peoples’ decisions. Human happiness and misery are based on the choices that people make. Aristotle claimed that the primary goal of human beings is happiness. People do not find true happiness because it is connected to virtues. Many individuals lack virtues which reduces their happiness. Dalrymple argues happiness is linked to the choices made by individuals, but Aristotle claims that morality influences happiness.

Reasons for Dalrymple’s Argument

Dalrymple's argument convinces me in various ways. I informed my parents that I had depression when I did pass my examinations. I consulted a psychiatrist but found that I was angry and perceived negative attitude due to the things I encountered in my life. I was increasing emotions rather than principles which led to the failure of being accountable for the activities I carried out in life. After accepting my responsibilities, I am capable of handling my emotions under different circumstances.

I support Dalrymple's argument that evil is present in all people, but it is dependent on the scope of its display. The state carries out corrupt activities but encourages individual to refrain from evil actions. Everyone has a free will to make the right decision on whether to carry out illegal acts.
