In the past there a lot of funds have been pumped into HIV/AIDS prevention from mother to child including both from the private and public sector including: donor governments, multilateral institutions, philanthropic donations from individuals. The Public sector funding is mainly through bilateral and multilateral channel. Bilateral channels are mainly from counties while multilateral channels are from multinational organisations e.g. UNITAD, President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), United Nations, and the Global Fund among others. Private sectors funding this include private philanthropies like corporates, faith-based organizations, individuals and Non-governmental organisations (Gall et al., 2017). The leading foundation is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Funding from the private sector is not only financial but also reduction of cost of HIV treatment and prevention from mother to child.

In recent years this has decreased by 7% between the year 2015 and 2016 in the public sector. In the private sector in 2013 they gave an increased 8% in finances though this is still 8% less of what they gave in 2008 (FitzHarris et al., 2017). In general, both private and public sector have had a reduction in the funding in the present as compared to the past. This can be attributed to the economic crisis in 2008. Since such funding was mainly from international donors and governments to middle and low income countries, these countries ae now beginning leading on efforts to take the epidemic. This has led to increased accountability and fostering of ownership in the implementation of the national response to AIDS and specifically on mother to child transmission (FitzHarris et al., 2017).

Looking into the future, there is need to increase the funding towards the same so as to so as to make significant progress in its prevention from mother to child. There is also need for the funding to be spread between preventive measures as well as treatment measures and not a bias on treatment measures alone.
