Ms. Jaxson has a moral obligation to accommodate Claudia because she is in gender identity crisis stage. At this stage, students can become confused because of the changes that occur in their lives. Claudia is a female student, but people refer to her as Claude and identify her male probably because she has not undergone the regular physical changes that adolescents experience to identify themselves with appropriate gender. Claudia may be suffering from gender dysphoria a condition that makes one feel emotionally and psychologically belonging to a particular gender. Claudia is confused regarding her identity, and she needs to be guided that she is just undergoing a normal phase of life and soon she will identify her gender ( O’Flaherty, & Fisher, 2008) . Claudia needs some therapy to help her cope with the school environment and fit in society amid the gender identity crisis. Jaxson can provide mental health support, peer support group to facilitate her gender transition successfully.
If the Supreme Court were involved in the scenario, it would apply title IX. Title IX prohibits discrimination of students in any federally funded schools. Claudia requires a safe school environment free from discrimination based on sex and that should be provided by the class teacher. That is the reason she needs accommodation, and the teacher must offer her the support she needs against students that discriminate her based on sex and her gender identity issues. Title IX thus provides Claudia with the reason for getting protection against the students who discriminate her based on her gender (The United States Departments of Justice, 2018). The teacher has no moral duty not to accommodate the students even though she understands that she is only basing a stage in life.
