This paper analyses a GIS article from Esri’s blog under the news section. The article is titled “ how maps help the media see what others can’t see ” dated July 9 th, 2019 by Robby Deming.
Describe two to three specific issues with regard to geographic representation in the application of GIS for the project in your article.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
According to this article, there are several specific issues with regard to Geographic representation in application of IS for identifying what others can’t easily identify through maps. Such mentioned issues include: First, reporters use the GIS in the analysis and visualization of place-based patterns across rising data content. Secondly, maps offer key context thus giving media audiences a greater understanding of the current events. Thirdly, journalists are able to connect people, places and reasons (that is where and why) by mapping the stories ( How Maps Help the Media, 2019).
Explain how geographic scale is important for your selected project in the news article
Maps show the nexus of trends and incidents in a manner that relates to people’s sense of place and to this regard help us to see what we could otherwise not. Geographic scale thus becomes very instrumental in mapping. A GIS scale help to contrast and detect any changes in maps educates the reader about prominent landmarks as well as appreciating the distance value, acts as a guide during visit to unfamiliar places as well as preventing confusion between landmarks ( Types of Scale, 2017).
In response to your peers, discuss how the applications of GIS in their selected disciplines are similar to or different from the discipline you selected
The application of GIS in different disciplines portrays a big similarity and also a gap depending on how closely-related the disciplines are. For instance, the application of GIS in Geography and political science have a similarity in that political scientists tend to take advantage of modern maps to reach the public during campaigns. Similarly, for archaeology as a discipline, mapping is necessary for the analysis of depositional patterns, quantification of artifacts and catalog. In public administration, GIS is very important in realizing population data using maps. Thus, the application of GIS across all the disciplines displays a similar facet ( Chakroun & Benie, 2005).
How could these applications be improved ?
The various applications of Geographic Information Systems can easily be improved through remote sensing. This involves taking earth measurements of the earth by the use of sensors on satellites or airplanes. Remote sensing can help to manipulate, analyze and visualize data images which can then be integrated within the GIS spatial support systems. This consequently will help to improve the applications of GIS in the number of growing disciplines.
