Reverse logistics can be defined as the movement of commodities from a consumer to the original point or to the manufacturer whose purpose is to either due to replacement, salvage, excess, restock, recall or recycle of hazardous material.

Discuss the problem of reverse logistics.

According to the “Federal Register webpage”, unique problems are evident during the process of reverse logistics regarding hazardous materials (hazmat). Firstly, a knowledge gap occurs concerning certain products' transportation. Secondly, retail stores lack employee training based on hazardous materials. The third problem concerns the hazmat regulations’ difficulty being applied for the shipments of reverse logistics. Nonetheless, there are issues due to the different packaging done that differ from the original method of doing the packaging process. Also, there is the subjection of the hazmat to "Environment Protection Agency" and the items' inclusion that include consumer commodities that do not meet the definition "consumer commodity."

How reverse logistics relates to hazardous materials packaging.

The two (reverse logistics and hazmat packaging) relates regarding consistency in that they both ensure that the standards in the provision of safe packaging are available for the least hazardous items. The need for integrity and similar strength is vital. Secondly, they relate regarding the leak-proof requirement for products. Inmar Inc. states that it is unnecessary to authorize absorbent materials and suggest cardboard boxes that are leak-proof to be adequate. Hence, it ensures that no leakages are encountered under such conditions.

Nonetheless, they are related to shipment guidelines. Therefore, without an extension of the guidelines covering the vessels used domestically and shipments during the process of reverse logistics; then different retailers would establish two procedures that can confuse, are complex and possess final execution problems. Hence, the need for the relationship is essential. Also, reverse logistics relates to the hazmat packaging regarding the increased consumer products as found in Division 6.1. For example, rat poison found in some retail outlets. Also, there is a relationship regarding safety. For instance, the PHMSA has included the shipments of 1.4G and 1.4S fireworks to the transportation of flares and some returned cylinders that do not match the definitions encrypted in the descriptions as found in Division 2.2 or Division 2.1. The safety concerns for the fireworks are appropriately balanced leading to the 30 kg per package.
