Road and air are the two modes of transportation that will be effective and efficient in moving the product to the distribution centers in Albany, NY, Phoenix, AZ, and Jacksonville, FL. The two modes of transport are the priority because they are cheap, considering the type of operation the parent company in Manchester, NH, engages in to serve the consumers' utility. Air transport will be the most effective for the transportation of the goods from Manchester, NH to Albany, NY. Equally, air transport will deliver the products from Manchester, NH to Phoenix, AZ. Jacksonville has located Florida, which is miles away from the parent company in Manchester located in New Hampshire. Thus, air transport would still be the most suitable. All three distribution centers are on the other side of the North Atlantic Ocean. The only way to get to the distribution centers is by air transport, which is faster, reliable, and cheap. The selected mode of transport will land the product cargo in the airports located in the different ones, after which the transportation of the extensive product cargo will be through the trucks. Trucks are significant as they can carry heavy payloads and make the delivery to the respective distribution centers.

Summarize

In intermodal transportation, there is the use of more than a single means of transport. The intermodal network plan will involve the use of both air and road transport. There will be a direct flight from Manchester airport to Flughafen Munchen, the primary airport in Munich, Germany. The intermodal network prefers to have a direct flight because of two main reasons. The main reason is to cut down on the cost of transportation. When the intermodal system is long and has more modes of transport, then the cost of delivering the items to the desired destination equally increases. Another reason is efficiency and effectiveness. Of all the three means of transportation, the air is the fastest implying that the delivery will be on time. If the company were to consider using a train from Manchester to port the cargo via the ocean, it would take longer than expected to make the delivery. Once the shipment reaches, Flughafen Munchen road transport will come in handy. They will be loaded into trucks and then transported to the distribution center in Munich, Germany. There are only two links in the intermodal—one from Manchester to Flughafen airport and the other from the airport to the distribution center. The best shipping contains to use in the intermodal link is the cargo roll. The containers are of a thick and strong wire mesh that increases their durability if the company purchase the cargo roll container once that can use it for several other shipment processes to take place in the future, thus, cutting down on cost.

Modal Choice

One of the carrier services that I will use at Manchester airport is Shipping Worldwide Co. The company makes freight cargo transportation to Los Angeles International Airport in the United States and Flughafen airport in Europe (Cylex, 2020). That makes the carry most suitable for the vehicle due to the direct link. In the United States, the company has offices courier delivery. Thus, the product's transportation from Los Angeles International airport to Albany, NY, Phoenix, AZ, and Jacksonville, FL, will be covered by the Shipping Worldwide company. However, Germany's road transport will be carried out by a different entity as Shipping Worldwide Company doesn't offer road transport services in the area. CS4 logistics company will transport the cargo from Flughafen airport to the distribution center in Munich, Germany (CS4 Logistics, 2020). The reason for selecting the CS4 carriers is their proximity to the distribution center, implying that their transportation cost will be favorable.

Compare and Contrast

Environmental changes affect the air and transport models similarly. In harsh environmental conditions, the cargo plane can't leave the airports, and there will be a delay in the delivery. The same applies to the road model as the truck drivers will have difficulty driving in harsh environmental conditions and may take longer than expected to make the deliveries. While considering the consumers' value for judgement two main thing are important in the choices. One is the cost of transportation and the other is the ease of transportation. While using the decision matrix I will assign cost a weight of five and east of transportation a weight of four. That is because the main aim of the company is to minimize on the cost of transportation by all means. The operations during the transportation logistics need to be within the budget of the company as it should not surpass. Environmental impact and Consumers' value judgments affect the whole transportation plan. If there is a delay in delivery due to harsh environmental conditions, the consumers will have negative feedback. But still, the company has to be within the stipulated budget despite the challenges of timely delivery due to harsh environmental conditions. Thus, the weight should be on the issue of cost as it is the main priority.
