The aspect I find most interesting is how spirituality is connected to disease and healing. Personally, this gives me insights as a medical student to understand how to help patients overcome the disease and suffering that they go through. Our ancestors understood that suffering was directly linked to spirituality ( VanderWeel and Koh, 2017 ), thus they took their time to ensure that the patient was taken good care of. When people suffer they do not need medicines only as we can see, in the modern world, they need people to help them see meaning in life.
Though these people may ask questions that do not require direct answers, thus a medic should sit with them and hold them up giving them hope that they will heal and meet their goals. From the study, the disease does not kill but the loss of meaning kills. Patients do not need qualified medics who are dictating what they should be taking as medicine, they want people who will hold them up while giving them medicine and speaking to them words of hope that they will heal and meet their goals and objectives in life ( VanderWeel and Koh, 2017 ). This can be seen in the case of the lady that was suffering from ovarian cancer through the encouragement of the medics the lady scammed and is currently teaching medical students. The physicians gave her hope that there is meaning in life and she will achieve all that she has set and through continuous interaction with the lady she is now not attending the chemotherapy sessions.

According to my view disease is directly linked to spirituality and this is why when people suffer, they ask themselves questions like could not God heal them from the suffering? On the other hand, healing is the process where the body tries to find its way back to function normally after suffering. As the body does this the patients have to be encouraged spiritually thus making life has meaning lest they lose hope and die for lack of meaning in life. Thus every physician should endeavor to instill hope and meaning in patients ( VanderWeel and Koh, 2017 )
