Yonkers is the fourth largest and most populous city in Winchester County, New York. Located along the Hudson River, it is at the center of both the Hudson Valley and New York City; it therefore, serves as the gateway between the two. It is considered a highly convenient location in terms of accessibility, workability, livability, and desirability, among others. Yonkers City is affordable and offers a vast range of opportunities both to individual residents and commercial investors which explains the steadily growing population and the advancing investments and projects in and around the Hudson Valley area. I chose the city for multiple reasons including the fact that I am from New York and I work in Bronx, both of my parents and from Yonkers and the need to analyze the health spectrum of the city.

At the South Broadway in St. Joseph’s Medical Center is also one of the largest healthcare institutions in the entire Winchester county. Other popular hospitals include Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center and Lawrence hospital. The city’s healthcare system caters for the needs of special population such as the elderly, drug addicts, and people with mental disorders among others through its nursing, senior home, and rehab centers such as Sans Souci, Five Star Premier Residences of Yonkers, Regency Extended Care center and more.

Demographic

According to the previously conducted census, Yonkers is 55.8 percent white followed by 41.4 percent Non-Hispanics ( Yonkers City Government, n.d.) . The rest of the groups, that is, blacks, Latinos and Asians make up 16, 34.7, and 5.8 percent respectively ( Yonkers City Government, n.d.) . The racial profile of the area proves that it is one of the most diversified cities in the entire United States. Grouping the population into various age ranges and categories produces somewhat interesting aspect of Yonkers’ residents.

In terms of the age range, approximately 25 percent of the residents are minors (below the age of 18 years). In attempt to make sense of the younger population group and link it with other parameters of the area, experts explain that the expanding range of younger population is the reason for the growing school system in and around the neighborhood even when that of other districts across the United States continues to remain the same or shrink. Youths and adults (aged between 18-65 years) make up the most population – at 40 percent ( Yonkers City Government, n.d.) . Seniors on the hand, make up only 15 percent of the population ( Yonkers City Government, n.d.) . The population is well distributed as far as age is concerned. This is because the working population (people aged between 18 and 65) make up the majority of the residents thereby economically impacting the city.

Income and Employment

Income and employment are ideal indicators of economic status and performance of a city like Yonkers. Statistically, according to the City’s website, out of about 200,000 residents, the labor force is nearly 100,000 people who work across about 18,000 registered organizations ( Area Vibes, 2019) . The figures are indicative of how strong Yonkers’ economic base is. Additionally, the average income per capita for Yonkers is $31,300 which is slightly lower than that of New York by about 5 percent ( Area Vibes, 2019) higher than the national average which also shows that the city outperforms the country.

Further, household income is about $61,300, a figure higher than New York’s and the country by 1 and 11 percent respectively ( Area Vibes, 2019) . In spite of the excellent economic outlook of the area, Yonkers still battles with social issues such as high unemployment and poverty rates. Currently, unemployment stands at 5 percent and poverty at 17 percent which both massively outweigh both the New York’s and national averages ( Area Vibes, 2019) . These are two problems are responsible for constant nightmares for the local authorities.
