The purview of nursing, just like other professions is directly and indirectly affected by the policies and laws that govern the nation. The American Nurses' Association's Political Action Committee (ANA-PAC) is an organization that seeks to ensure that policies and laws in America are favorable to nurses and their patients. Among the means that the ANA-PAC utilizes to achieve its objectives is lobbying relevant authorities and pushing for the right leaders to be elected at the federal levels (ANA, 2018).
Upon careful evaluation of the ANA-PAC’s goals and agenda, it is my informed opinion that what the organization does is extremely necessary and relevant to the profession of nursing. For nurses to be effective at their work, they require laws and policies that recognize their roles, provides for their protection, proper remuneration, and training. Policies and laws are developed by the executive and legislature respectively hence ANA-PAC is focused on the right place. An organization that ensures that individuals who have the interest of nursing at heart and also lobbies for relevant issues to be canvassed at the highest levels of government are thus fundamental. The obligations of ANA-PAC must be expensive but they are definitely worth the cost.

My interests as a nurse are twofold and include my personal interests professionally and as a human being, and also the interests of my patients as individuals under a public health perspective. I, however, feel that the ANA-PAC is more focused on nursing as a profession than it is about nurses themselves thus my interests as a nurse are not properly represented. Remuneration, benefits, working hours of nurses, and working conditions should be given more priority at the federal level by the ANA-PAC. For example, there should be a federal law limiting the number of patients a nurse should handle at a time. Further, the APN is currently as qualified and competent as other clinical experts such as physicians and should be accorded equal opportunity and status in healthcare institutions through change of relevant federal laws and policies. ANA-PAC is doing a commendable job, but it can do better.
