Define the term culture.
According to Zimmermann 2017, culture refers to knowledge and characteristics of certain group of persons encompassing cuisine, language, religion, arts, music and social habits (Zimmermann, 2013). The videos display culture as the belief that a person or people tend to believe in and base their living/decisions in it such that they get defined by it in every aspect that they do or have in their daily lives. Culture tends to be very hard to break and pull the people off from it. For instance, in Working with an interpreter, Elena Sanchez explains her worries about how her daughters’ reactions to the new routine since her culture’s ways of shaping their lives is sitting upright and having healthy hair and skin.
Discuss some of your experiences in caring for a patient from a different culture than your own .
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
Culture is what defines most people in society, setting the pace and giving he direction to follow in life. These beliefs held by the different people or communities are so deep-rooted into them such that they can cause a conflict between them and those who tend to insist or break these beliefs. For instance, in the cultural religious beliefs, Nadira Ansari the patient clearly states that her culture does not allow her to remove her hijab in front of a man (Dr. Callahan) other than her husband or another woman (Dr. Smith) (HHS.gov, n.d.). In my case, as a health care professional, just like Dr. Callahan, a patient refused that I would not serve him since I am younger than him. His words were clear, “my culture does not allow a younger person than me to come close to me not unless it is during the cultural rites, and when they are summoned and therefore it would only be an age-mate or an older doctor who would serve him”.
What measures did you take to ensure the information you received from your patient was accurate?
A career in healthcare and nursing, is a continuous learning process only that learning shifts from laboratories and classrooms to the open world. After the incident, I consulted with colleagues and educated myself about other different cultures. Through nursing assessment, I was able to find out a lot more about the patient (Toney-Butler & Unison-Pace, 2019).
How did you ensure that the patient understood the information that you gave them?
Culture might be bigger than medicine, but according to Ha & Longnecker (2010), medicine is an artist whose creative and magical capacity has long been acknowledged as residing in the interpersonal features of patient-physician association. Ensuring that the patients get satisfied then it is significance to ensure that they feel comfortable by providing translation/interpretation services which may be valuable in case there is language barrier just like in Elena Sanchez’s case or poor language understanding like the Kims.
