Scenario Likely to Impact St. Joseph’s Health
In 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck New Jersey, causing extensive destruction. Some of the damages that occurred were the destruction of power lines that led to extended power outages, infrastructural damage, and disruption of transportation services (Swerdel et al., 2014). Therefore, it is important to consider how a natural disaster, such as a hurricane is likely to impact St’ Joseph’s Health located in Paterson, New Jersey. Research has proven that the occurrence of natural disasters increases mortality rates. For instance, the onset of a natural disaster is accompanied by a significant increase in the incidence of and mortality from cardiovascular events. Apart from the increase in the incidence of, and mortality of cardiovascular events, natural disasters such as hurricanes also cause injuries and fatalities, that must be handled efficiently by healthcare facilities.
Due to the hospital’s vulnerability to disaster events, it is important to have a well-implemented disaster management plan to mitigate the effects of the disaster. Mitigation efforts aim to reduce potential losses from hazards, ensure prompt and appropriate assistance to victims of disasters, and achieve rapid recovery. Hospitals are vulnerable to disasters and require special attention since they must continue patient treatment and care for those injured by the disaster event. They must secure the safety of all patients and occupants.
Press Statement
On behalf of the St. Joseph’s Health family, I would like to express my condolences to all the family and friends that have been affected by the hurricane. We, like every other member of this close-knit community, have been affected by the event. We are deeply saddened by the event that transpired and the fatalities that resulted from it. We would like to appreciate the tremendous job done by our emergency service providers and all health systems that have assisted in managing the surge in healthcare demand. St. Joseph’s Health received a total of 30 patients who all arrived via EMS. 23 of the patients suffered from injuries sustained during the event, while 7 patients unfortunately suffered from fatal wounds. We are currently doing everything we can to provide emergency care services to all victims while maintaining normal patient care. Thank you for your time.
