Petroleum Landman is an individual who is associated with providing services in companies which deal with oil as well as gas products (Travis, &Spielman, 2016). Subsequently, these people are involved in offering services which include acquiring mineral rights for their respective companies. They also conduct negotiations which allow the companies to explore mineral oils in several places. Moreover, they identify risks that could lead to the companies making mistakes that could spark major lawsuits which would result in a lapse or failure to have the necessary funding to explorations for petroleum or other minerals. In America, the petroleum landman holds a strong history as reviewed below.

Oil exploration began in the 18th Century and evolved rapidly with many oil drills being discovered as well as new technology and equipment being made. In America, Texas is credited for being the first region whereby oil drills were first established (O'Connor, 2007). However, the initial drill was first made in the year 1859 in Pennsylvania, and this marked the onset of many oil drills which followed shortly after. In the year 1878 the first mineral reservation in Texas was established. This played an important role in the exploration of oil in America. In 1900, the Spindle top geyser was discovered which revolutionized oil exploration in the region. Two years later, the first fuel company in Texas was established which later come to be known as the Texaco (Etter, 2015).

The history of the American landmen dates back to the 19th Century when the oil industry began to grow and solidify paving the way for a broad range of different oil and gas skills other than the roughnecks that worked on the actual drilling platforms. Subsequently, the government’s interest in the exploration of the oil began at this particular period as well. Mineral rights began to be leased out to individual companies which were interested in the exploration of oil. This led to the creation of many job opportunities which necessitated the establishment of landmen in the mineral companies. Consequently, Panhandle Association of Petroleum Landmen was established as the initial professional organizations with regards to the American Petroleum Landmen in 1950.

With the demand of the landman rising each day, the landmen were required to possess several characteristics and skills which would help them in them to run the companies. Initially, the company required that individuals possess skills that relate to wind industries (O'Connor, 2007). This involves the ability to locate the turbines and be able to know the direction of the wind, and identify with whom they would enter a negotiation deal with. As such, the qualities that were required in wind industries coincided with those which were required for landman positions. Subsequently, this led to the first university in 1958, at the University of Oklahoma to offered land management degrees. It aimed at educating the individuals how to negotiate and manage land hence it was useful for the landmen at this particular period.

Shortly after the American Association of Professional Landmen was established, it was done with an intention of enabling the landmen to perform their work diligently. It established certification program in the year 1979 for the people of America (Travis, & Spielman, 2016). The program was voluntary, and people were encouraged to join in order to get the positions as landmines in the companies. The certifications were divided into three categories which were crucial in offering different skills in landmine to the individuals.

Consequently, many institutions were established in order to provide knowledge to the undergraduates on issues relating to landmen. This brought about a revolution in the industry as many technologies were developed to simplifier their work. Currently day the landmen like many other industries have been relying on computerized tools and the help of satellites as well as mobile services in the running of the petroleum industries (Searle, Lux, Joffé, George, & Stevens, 2008). This has enabled them to complete tasks that would have taken a longer period to be completed in a short timeframe and deliver quality work as compared to the early years (AAPL, 2010).
