According to a Pew Research Center article written by Cohn & Taylor (2010), 10,000 Baby Boomers or U.S. citizens turn 65 each day. As the Baby Boomers get older, they start thinking about their long-term care, identifying which healthcare facilities they may need. However, until then, many U.S. citizens may not know what nursing homes are and why we need them. This paper will delve into discussing why we need nursing homes and what has changed in our society to require nursing homes. Habermas’s idea of system and lifeworld will be used to provide explanations.
We need nursing homes for several reasons. First, nursing homes provide a wide range of health and personal services for aging individuals. Typically, as individuals age, they require assistance with medications, physical mobility, meal preparation, and 24-hour supervision, among other services (Regis College, n.d). Secondly, we need nursing homes because they provide a positive quality of life for aging individuals as well as for individuals with physical or mental conditions. Lastly, nursing homes provide medical care to individuals who have recently been released from the hospital but cannot move back home (Regis College, n.d). These individuals live in nursing homes to receive the care they need.

The population in the U.S. is aging very fast. As stated earlier, 10,000 U.S. citizens turn 65 each day (Cohn & Taylor, 2010). With the graying of Baby Boomers, the aging in the U.S. is about a new turn. It is for this reason that more nursing homes are needed in the U.S. Jurgen Habermas holds that the society is structured concurrently on two levels, namely, lifeworld and system (Rich-Ruiz et al., 2014). As such, the need for nursing homes (system) results from an increase in the aging population (lifeworld).
