It may not be able to accurately predict the future, but a careful study of the right factors can enable a probable insight into what the future holds. Among the right factors for study is the past. A careful look at the last ten years can paint a possible image about the next ten years. Further, since the instant subject is kindred to technology, the past has revealed that within science fiction, art and literature lie keys as to what the future world holds. It is by an evaluation of these two factors that the imagined future of social interaction is based. It seems apparent that in the next year, most social relationships will be premised on a near-constant communication and a near-absolute absence of actual physical contact.
Humans are social beings who need to interact with one another consistently. The traditional society was considered to be closely knit but recent happenings have proven that perhaps they only seemed to because the actual meeting was the only means of interaction. This is based on the fact that actual physical interactions in social relationships have been inversely proportional to the development of communication technology. The phone would cause the people to hear one another and did reduce interaction. The Cameraphone then enables people to exchange pictures and this reduced physical interaction even further. The smartphone has since introduced video calls and people no longer feel the need to meet. Considering what the smartphone was in 2008 as well as what is portrayed in science fiction, in 2028, phones will have developed a capability for three-dimensional virtual meetings. People will be able to visit one another and seat together virtually and hold virtual face to face conversations. Once this happens, hope for physical interaction will have been lost.

It is a fact that technology has signified the reduction of social interaction in the society but this does not answer the question of what motivates people to meet over technology and not physically. The answer to this question holds the key as to what social interaction will be in the next ten years. In all fairness, most people who chat on video calls and exchange multimedia content on social media would actually love to meet and interact. Unfortunately, there is simply no time. The entire life of the modern human being is so carefully structured to make the proverbial ends meet that there is no room for any other form of meeting. The last 20 years show that things are bound to get worse, not better in this area. For example, one would have thought that innovation and technology would lessen the number of years one needs to take in school. Instead, technology is actually making education last longer due to the demands it brings to all areas of life.
The inverse is, therefore, happening. In ten years, having a master’s degree is considered as the normal education course. This means the entire first half of life will be spent gaining an education. The second half is spent in trying to make a gainful living out of the painfully earned education. This will leave no time for actual social interaction. The only free time available will be in between meetings, in between flights, and in between other events. It is logistically impossible to organize social interaction from a physical perspective in between seemingly more important events. This will result in a higher reliance on technology for social interaction. Availability of more robust and advanced social interaction tools such as three-dimensional meetings will result in a higher level of social satisfaction without actually meeting and this will mark the eventual death of social interaction involving actual contact.
