People live in a world where the male gender has always received glorification at the expense of the females who have largely remained on the periphery. Historical data proves that women are probably the most oppressed group for as long as anyone can remember. In asserting a universal male superiority, women have suffered as a result leading to various social inequalities that have limited their potential. Gender inequality continues to affect women in several critical areas including wages and salaries, gender-based violence, and early marriages amongst others (Blau, 2016).Women continues to suffer from workplace discriminations, harassment, and failure to consider the lifestyle hardships they endure such as childbirth. In limiting one’s personal biases while addressing the issue, it is vital to apply empathy where an individual puts themselves in the position of the thousands of women experiencing inequalities and discrimination. Personal biases will also be minimized through thorough research that clearly shows how females have suffered historical injustices and oppression at the hands of men.

Through a sociological lens, gender inequality can be viewed through the lenses of the conflict theory where men subordinate women as a way of maintaining power and privilege in the society. Jayachandran (2015) intimated that the conflict argument asserts that social problems tend to occur when dominant sides mistreat and subordinate the smaller ones. Some of the common variables that come into play when discussing gender inequality include employment opportunities, political representations, rights and freedoms, remuneration, and gender roles amongst others (Branisa, Klasen, & Ziegler, 2013). Gender inequality and discrimination has its local and global impacts. Locally, it can increase gender-based violence, poverty, disenfranchisement, and lack of social amenities. Globally, women will mainly fail to ascend to influential leadership positions making them subjects in every aspect. Gender equality will only come when people realize that women are equally as important as men. It, therefore, calls for the creation of gender-sensitive laws and policies in virtually every aspect including education and employment.
