Criminal justice is an exciting field of study which teaches students the necessary approaches to ensuring a safer community free from crimes. The course is extensive and covers a wide range of topics, most of which I found interesting. Specifically, the lessons on latent fingerprints were of great interest to me. The whole theory and application of latent fingerprint is quite intriguing and very effective at solving criminal cases. Criminal investigation has evolved over the years, and this means more sophisticated ways of ascertaining methods, motives, and identities of criminals. Latent fingerprints have made this even much more straightforward. They include traces of sweat, oil, or other natural secretions on the skin that are not ordinarily visible. These latent fingerprints are usually made visible using dusting techniques in cases where the surface is hard. Otherwise, chemical techniques are used to make prints visible where the surface is porous. These collected fingerprints help the police track down suspected criminals and even tie them down using the evidence at hand. With the computerization of fingerprints, it is now possible to identify criminals just by the prints they left behind at a crime scene. I believe this advancement in technology has been highly crucial and effective in this particular area of study. I cannot imagine how hard it was in the past to establish the strong physical evidence required to convict a criminal. Visible prints could also be used, but now that criminals are getting sophisticated and more cautious, it is necessary to integrate latent fingerprints. I believe in one way or the other, this particular aspect of criminal tracking has been effective at solving many cases over the years. Such techniques will only make police work easier and, at the same time, accurate. I want to think of it as a significant milestone regarding the criminal justice system.
