Explain how your view of what a “patient” is has changed and expanded

My interactions with various patients has changed my perception of who a “patient” really is from just an ailing individual in need of health care services to an individual who besides being physically attended to, should have their emotional, social, spiritual and economic needs catered for. I have also learnt to consider the patient’s reaction to disease and the impact that the ailment has on their capacity to take care of themselves. This forms the basis of holistic healthcare that has been defined as a “total” or “complete” care of the patient (Ventegodt et al., 2020). For instance, persons living with intellectual and developmental disabilities should be offered care that is coordinated and integrated to boost their health outcomes, minimize costs of care and ensure satisfaction.

The differences in the assessment of these two groups of nurses arise from the investigation of their working environments. Public health nurses perform their duties in close association with the general public and communities. They comprise health educators, homecare nurses, hospice nurses and community nurses. On the contrary, clinical nurses work within the setting of a hospital (Willgerodt et al., 2018). While a clinical nurse deals with an individual case at the hospital, the public health nurse attempts to find out more about the prevalence of such cases within the community. Public health nurses also participate in designing and implementing campaigns on health education as well as strategies aimed at disease prevention. Some of these strategies are community screening and immunizations (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2019). They work with local and state authorities to reinforce health regulations and requirements, besides making partnerships with community leaders and interprofessional groups (Masters, 2018). The clinical nurse’s role, however, is limited in that it does not give room for many interactions of this nature.
