The common phrase Rome was not built in a day shows the magnificent structures and innovation of the ancient Roman Engineers. Just as the title afforded to the Ancient Greek Philosophers, Roman engineers should receive the same credentials for their excellence in construction and the influence of these structures in the modern world. The Colosseum started by Emperor Vespasian and completed by Titus and Domitian provided the entertainment for gladiator fights and other major entertainments. The gigantic structure with rows of seats and the arena below made it possible for all spectators to witness the action below (Lisle, 2017). The technological and architectural structures may have evolved over the years but the same model is of the elevators and ramps from the cells at the basement, the exit staircases and arena at the center are similar to most sports stadiums today (Lisle, 2017). The sizes and capacity of the stadiums may be different from the Colosseum but it is no doubt that the Colosseum influenced modern stadium, for instance, Yankee Stadium has an architectural design similar to the Colosseum.
Roman roads and aqueducts are the other two architectures that without the Roman engineers, it would have taken ages for western civilization to develop the current road networks and water supplies to the cities respectively. The Roman Empire dominion in the ancient world meant that to maintain power and enhance its growth, it needed reliable road networks to facilitate transportation. Therefore, in 312BC the empire built a national highway stretching from Rome to Brindisi a distance of approximately 132 miles ( “The Influence of Roman Engineering on the Contemporary World” 2012). The use of crushed stone, mortar, sand and paver stones while accounting for water drainage was a masterstroke. Modern roads and highways still employ these layered and drainage techniques. Rome had a population of 500,000 to 1 million people. The city’s population would not exist without reliable water supply hence the construction of the aqueduct to supply water to the city. The Aqua Appia provided the best solutions for modern civilizations to supply water ( “Roman Contributions to the Modern World – What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?” 2017).

The Colosseum, roads, and aqueduct remain significant in the modern world. These structures enhanced entertainment, transport, and water respectively for the ancient Roman citizens and through the engineering brilliance influence the modern stadiums, highways, and water supplies that modern citizens enjoy.
