The term "same-sex couples" is primarily associated with both lesbian and gay relationships. Besides, same-sex marriage is the institutionalized acknowledgment of the existence of these relationships in the form of marriage. Therefore, this report provides an article summary discussing how same-sex couples often divide chores as well as what it reveals concerning modern parenting. According to Miller (2018) , these couples have always divided their chores much more evenly until they develop in becoming parents.

Additionally, these couples often use a more egalitarian way in dividing unpaid labour as they are not bound to any traditional gender roles, and therefore they appear in being more than committed to equality. This is also influenced by the fact that they are not automatically having varied earning potentials as they do not experience the issue of gender pay gap, and thus are both likely in working ( Miller, 2018 ). However, before the legalization of same-sex marriage, it was risky in terms of finance for one couple in stopping to work since that individual would have limited rights to the joint property of both couples, especially in case of death or breakup.

Also, the same-sex couples also change the manner in which they divide chores after having children. This is because they often start in dividing up chores the same way being done by heterosexual couples as determined by more representative studies of the gay/lesbian population. Although these couples may seem to be more equitable, one of them always has higher earnings while the other has a significant share of child care as well as household chores ( Miller, 2018 ). This reveals that such chores are not just divided on the basis of gender as much of the society’s same-sex relationships are still established for the single-earner families. Besides, this form of dividing chores emerges due to unavoidable circumstances that force these couples in falling back to the traditional role. Such circumstances are such as employers expecting a 24-hour availability of one of the couples or even lack of paid public preschool and parental leave.

Additionally, same-sex couples also divide their household chores with regards to their personal preferences. This is because not all of them may like doing the same chores as one partner may like cooking while the other like laundry. However, after adopting a child and start parenting, the couple with a smaller earning may forego his job to take care of the adopted baby as the other one with higher earnings goes to work and provide the family with the required basic needs including food and house rent ( Miller, 2018 ). This is not feminine or a masculine issue but it is just what these couples do to get their family moving in the right direction.

Finally, this division of chores between the same-sex couples reveals something significant concerning modern parenting. It shows that modern same-sex parents are no longer living in secrecy as they traditionally used to do for various reasons such as fear of harassment, stigma, legal concerns that are based on previous court cases that challenged their rights in becoming parents, as well as the concerns of the society that both lesbian and gay parenting results in negative effects to the kids ( Miller, 2018 ). Besides, the gay and lesbian modern parents are no longer affected by the negative stigma held against them by the society.
