In the speech, “Ain’t I a woman,” Sojourner Truth, advocates for the rights of women. She gives reasons why women should be treated equally. She highlights three main reasons as to why women should be treated the same as men.
Firstly, women can do the same amount of work as men. Here, Sojourner asks the abolitionists and suffragists to remember black women too. She states that she has as much muscle as a man. In support of this, Sojourner says she is capable of plowing, reaping, husking, chopping, and mowing like a man. She states she can do more than a man can, and so she should be treated equally.

Secondly, women should be treated equally and men should not be afraid that women would take more rights than they should. She says that men have excessively many rights and that they should let women have at least half of the rules. She argues out that when you have a lot, it is logical to share with the person who has little or none.
In her third point, Sojourner uses the bible. She states that men say that women cannot have as much rights as women because Christ was not a woman. In support of this, she states that Christ was the son of Mary and that he would not have been born were it not for his mother, thus women should not be denied rights. She continues to argue that Eve, the first woman, had much power and overturned the world therefore women have the same amount of power to turn it back right again.
In her speech, Sojourner’s immediate audience mainly comprised of women. However, she directed the speech mainly to the men. Before she gave the speech, the audience sneered at her for they did not want her to speak. Immediately after she gave her speech, the audience applauded with respect and admiration. Many ran to shake hands with her. The reason being, she touched many hearts since she addressed issues that little women could get the courage to address.
Despite advocating for women’s rights, there are pressing injustices prevalent in the society. The major problem is sexism and gender biasness especially in the workstations. Women do not have equal rights in job opportunities. An example is that they are few in the work industry; they rarely get promotions, and receive less payment.
