Take Away from the Article

The article describes that the current coronavirus pandemic is likely to affect women more than men, unlike other economic recessions that happened in the past. The author denotes that past pandemics have affected the manufacturing industries and, as a result, led to the loss of jobs for men since they are the ones who traditionally worked in such sectors. However, the current coronavirus pandemic is affecting single women in different ways. For instance, the closure of day-cares and school has had a negative impact on single working mothers. For instance, single mothers are unable to balance work and taking care of their children due to the closure of schools as a measure introduced to contain the spread of the virus.

In addition, most single mothers work on a part-time basis in order to help balance their jobs and families. However, most organizations that have laid off their members of staff have begun with those on a part-time basis. As a result, many single mothers have been negatively affected and left to suffer in harsh economic conditions. In addition, such part-time jobs are not unionized, and they are an easy target for management during retrenchment. When they are such single mothers are laid off, they are unable to pay for medical insurance, thereby making a challenge for their children to access quality health care.

Moreover, the structure of jobs in the USA is characterized by more men working in the formal and unionized jobs while women engage in informal jobs such as selling clothes in a boutique. As a result of the pandemic, more single mothers are affected by the low economic activities in the country, thereby making it a challenge to provide basic needs to their children, such as food and quality housing. Moreover, single mothers are bearing the emotional effect of coronavirus pandemic. For instance, they are the single breadwinners for their families, therefore making it challenging, especially in the midst of a crisis that has crippled most sectors of the economy.

Why the Article Resonated

The article resonates with me personally because I was raised by a single mother after the death of my father. She underwent many challenges, such as job loss and lack of funds to support our education and healthcare needs. She worked in a manufacturing company and was laid off as the company's strategy to cut costs. Therefore, the article resonates with me because I am aware of the plight of single mothers having being raised by one. Therefore, single mothers are feeling more negative impacts of the pandemic as compared to married women because they are sole breadwinners for their children.

Application to the Five Practices

The article provides essential information that I can apply in my personal and professional life in terms of the five practices. For instance, the article has enabled me to understand the plight of single mothers and why they form part of the vulnerable members of society. Therefore, I will use my career to create awareness on the challenges of single mothers, for instance, through advocating for better and equal job opportunities as well as being provided a special working shift to help them balance between work and their children. Moreover, the article will enable me to be more accommodative and embrace single mothers, especially at the workplace, since they need more emotional support. In addition, the information contained in the article will help me in terms of the five practices by helping to enable single mothers act, challenge the processes, and model the way as well as inspire a shared vision among single mothers.
