Plagiarism is passing off another person’s idea as your work. Plagiarism may occur when a writer uses outside information to gain more insight on a paper, but fails to give credit to the author in the paper. While using outside reference is advisable, some mechanisms may be used to avoid plagiarism
One way of avoiding plagiarism is by properly quoting works and paraphrasing them in presentation. When using outside sources, quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing may be used to include ideas from other authors in a paper while demonstrating understanding and clear interpretation of these texts ( Steps to Avoiding Plagiarism, 2019 ). Quoting involves word-to-word copying of short passages from the original text and enclosing them with quotation marks. Paraphrasing involves changing the words and phrases of the original text without changing the meaning of the text. In summarizing, the main ideas that present the overview and finding of the text are expressed by the writer using different words. However, in all the above, the authors name and publication date have to be referenced.

Using outside sources enables a writer or a researcher to gain more information and make more informed statements in the paper. In nursing, learning how to paraphrase and summarize helps to condense the current knowledge and align it with the practice. Research papers and professionally written material are packed with effectiveness and patient safety tools that need to be expressed and implemented ( Stevens, 2019 ). The knowledge of synthesizing would help nurses keen on gaining more knowledge and skills to not only strengthen their literature, but also to easily explain their interpretation within their own papers. Furthermore, knowing how to synthesize can help a writer to give authority to their paper and also help them form their point and influence their reader to agree with them.
It is important for writers to check outside sources to gain information in new areas of research. Writers should, however, avoid plagiarism or passing this information as their own. Plagiarism is avoided by quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing.
