Creating a professional nursing portfolio is an essential way of maintaining one's clinical, educational, and professional accomplishments. This document, however, is not a resume or a curriculum vitae but a showcase of one's expertise and competencies in the nursing field. The professional portfolio can be used as a guideline for further education, career advancements, and for planning academic goals. This portfolio can also be used in interviews and would be an excellent tool to showcase one's competencies through their education, practice, and leadership skills. This paper aims to give some of the strategies that have proven useful in developing a nursing portfolio.
When developing a nursing portfolio, it is vital to give an educational summary, licensure, and employment history with significant documentation like graduate transcripts, in-service attendance sheets, licenses, performance appraisal reports, and recommendation letters from previous institutions or employers (Reed, 2015). This information is vital as it gives the viewer an insight into one's accomplishments without going into unnecessary detail, which can be cumbersome. Adding subjective documentation such as narratives reflecting one's nursing experience and history demonstrate competency in the field. A detailed narrative can comprise of patient case studies and evidence-based research (Cusack & Smith, 2019). Skill competencies and prospects also show passion and dedication to career growth. Maintaining the professional portfolio is also essential, as it is a reflection of an individual's development of their skills and knowledge and current proof of their competencies in the field, further marketing an individual as they apply for career escalating positions in the nursing field (Cope & Murray, 2018). It is necessary to keep a soft and hard copy of the portfolio and to organize it in a coordinated manner through the use of labels for each subject. The soft copy should be backed up in more than one backup device.
