Sexual assault is one of the major social problems facing Durham, Ontario. Many sexual assault victims fear coming out in the open and therefore suffer in silence. While there are services for counseling and therapy sessions, as well as standby call options, some victims panic on the thought of talking or calling and sharing their ordeal. We acknowledge the importance of victim’s voice on sexual assault. The Durham Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) recognizes the silent suffering of all those horrified to talk. You are not alone; DRCC is looking forward to creating a crisis text line to serve all, the courageous, and the voiceless.
Although authorities are on high alert about the rising cases of sexual assault, their services end at prevention or court arraignment of the offenders. DRCC takes it upon itself to serve the victims and restore their dignity and self-esteem. Cases of sexual assault occur day in day out despite the police presence. Just recently, Friday, January 24, 2020, a female sex trade worker was sexually assaulted in Whitby (DurhamRegion.com, 2020). The offenders are increasingly targeting the vulnerable in the society mostly, the victims that would feel stigmatized to come out. Thus, targeting the sex worker was no coincidence but a premeditated offense.

While other crimes seem to reduce, sexual assault has been on the rise. Reporting for the Oshawa Express, Jones (2019) highlights the Durham police concession that sexual assault increased by 32% in 2018. The Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres (OCRCC) (2019) quotes Statistics Canada that on average sexual assaults increase by 19% annually in Ontario. However, many of the victims are left out of the available service and help options. Creating the text crisis line is a step forward promoting a wider reach to the sexual assault victims.
