The usefulness of a set of data is determined by the ease of understanding and making use of it. Graphical representation comes in handy as a way of enhancing the ability of readers to understand a set of data. There are various types of graphs with each having different usage depending on the nature of data and the intended purpose. Trendline graphs are a graphical representation where points have been summarized by a straight line. Therefore, it is vital to know the real examples of when to use trendline graphs together with their relevant illustrations.

Example 1: Average Temperatures for each day in a week

Illustration and Significance

In the trendline graph above, the straight dotted line across shows the average temperatures per day, indicating that the general temperature is gradually increasing. On Monday, the line is lower while on Sunday, it is slightly higher. The graph is ideal for people in their daily lives since it enables them to figure out their dressing as they go to work. From the trendline, one can decide between putting on lighter clothing as the week progresses due to the increasing temperatures.

Example 2: Math performance for all month in a year

Illustration and Significance

On the trendline graph above, the dotted line cutting across the monthly scores shows a dropping performance in math. This is demonstrated by the slanting trendline with the high side being on the earlier month of the year, and the lower side of the line being towards the end of the year. This is significant for teachers as it enables them to learn from the graph that the performance of their class in math is drastically dropping. Hence, the graph can allow teachers to view how severe the dropping trend is, and figure out ideal targeted teaching instructions to enable the class to improve. Then also, through this graph, teachers can come up with other effective teaching strategies that will allow their class to improve in the coming year.

As such, trendlines in both examples are vital in personal and the professional life of a teacher. In the first example, it shows that the temperatures are increasing gradually. This would enable one to decide to put on light clothes that are comfortable in such temperatures. On the other hand, the trendline in the second example shows how performance in math has dropped in a year. In the teaching profession, this will enable one to figure out more effective teaching strategies and use more targeted instructions.
