To be a successful leader, it is important that one acquires and masters all elements of emotional intelligence, Self-awareness being one of them. To effectively lead and manage groups a leader should have a distinct overview of their emotions, belief, strengths and weaknesses.

Musselwhite (2007) states that an effective leader should know how and when strengths should be demonstrated. An effective leader knows and focusses on their strengths and seeks assistance for their weaknesses. Understanding the importance of this element will foster better communication and increase understanding of the leader’s perspective, thus increasing productivity. In admitting their weaknesses, an effective leader empowers his people which in turn promotes cohesion and better working relations.

Self-discipline is a key aspect of self-awareness. An effective leader does this by developing and adhering to priorities, making self-discipline a lifestyle, having the ability to address and eradicate the temperament of making excuses and by staying focused on results (Carstens 2015). Adhering wholeheartedly to principles, putting into considerations previous experiences and picking what works and what doesn’t, often guarantees the leader’s success. A good example is how Steve Jobs incorporated discipline in a bid to bring Apple back to its feet. He instilled self-discipline in his employees and formed an efficient team of discipline that translated to increased productivity and creativity. This move hugely improved operational efficiency and got his team focused.

In conclusion, self-awareness is an important element but is often overlooked by many. For effective leadership, it is paramount that leaders are aware of such components and the significance they have in driving and positive outcomes.
