Cultivating Loyalty in Leadership
First, a leader who needs loyalty must be real and authentic with the person he/she is leading. Real and straight forward leaders are dependable, approachable and motivate their subjects. Respecting your subjects as a leader will also work to ensure that they also respect reciprocate respect and loyalty (Timothy, 2012). Leaders must ensure that their subjects have avenues to approach them and sharing their ideas. Motivating and challenging subjects ensures their growth hence earning their trust and loyalty. Leaders who want loyalty are also genuinely concerned about their subjects’ lives and ensure their needs are met and listened to.
What leaders can do to those subjects who are not loyal to them?
A leader should learn to stand behind people when they mess up issues to earn their respect, loyalty and teach them lessons. A leader is supposed to correct and discipline their subjects who are not loyal. Leaders should lead by example by admitting when wrong and also answer to public challenges publicly. They should also give clear expectations and, model them. Adopting high standards as a leader work helps in getting loyalty.
