Corporate unions are mainly formulated to protect employees’ rights. Recently, they have embraced collaborations with company management in matters such as poor attendance and motivation for their members. The administration, however, should develop policies that mitigate issues, including absenteeism and being late to work. When confronted, some employees may request union representatives in their meetings, and thus managers should have techniques to deal with such events.

There are several ways to deal with situations where employees have requested the presence of a labor union representative. As a manager, it would be prudent to accept the request to make the employee comfortable. Importantly, Randhawa (2017) suggests that in some cases, absenteeism is unavoidable. The managers should, therefore, be open-minded when conducting the meeting with CO Smith. During the meeting, the supervisor should be honest about the situation and outline the issues that led to it. They should indicate their expectation regarding the employee’s attendance by stating the policies set regarding the matter. Oke (2016) stipulates that managers should also be attentive to the employees’ problems as it provides insights on their absenteeism. They should genuinely listen to CO Smith’s reasons and then enforce their expectations. Additionally, the supervisor should be respectful to the union representative, and the employee as this ensures that the meeting happens as planned. These measures will help in ensuring that minimum time is spent to deal with the issue.

In conclusion, although labor unions represent employees, they also help the management to facilitate organizational goals. In meetings where their members request them, a manager should be honest, transparent, and respectful in ensuring that the goal is attained. Importantly, they can focus on the positive by outlining the necessity of having proper attendance and compliment the employee on previous achievements. Managers should ensure that they create good relationships with their employees and union representatives.
