In any healthcare setting, nurses play a significant role in building the image of the hospital. Nursing is demanding, and in this case, the management is mandated to divide the workload to avoid burnout. The workload can be described as the number of patients hospitalized compared to the ratio of nurses available. The quality of health care services highly depends on the number of the patient a nurse can attend to at a given time. The heavy workload for nurses has become problematic due to the growing demand for their services. ( Pérez-Francisco 2020). With the ever-increasing population and the increase of older people, the nurses’ services are prone to stretch. Another factor that has resulted in heavy workloads is the inadequate supply of nurses, increased stay by the patient, and expanded over time. Due to this, patient safety becomes a problem, and the hospital records a high turnover rate by nurses because of a lack of job satisfaction.

As a way to reduce the workload for nurses, the management can indulge in eliminating factors that cause excessive workload. In this case, the management can help in redesigning the work system by establishing one that can reduce overworking. Another factor is to balance out the workload, which involves bringing in other resources to assist. For instance, the health care facility can ask for community and social support to help them in performing specific duties. Insufficient nurses can result in a high turnover rate; in this case, the hospital should always ensure it has a sufficient supply of nurses. Besides, the organization should encourage and support time management as well as working in teams since it leads to the proper allocation of day to day activities. Another factor that can reduce the workload for nurses is creating consistent processes and procedures. Such activities include patient self-care systems that reduce nurse’s involvement from time to time. Lastly, the human resource department should ensure that working hours are differentiated from overtime to prevent conflicts within the healthcare facility.
