Hospital falls are a serious concern among medical practitioners due to their effects on the patient treatment and recovery process. Notably, medical institutions are currently required to implement various change processes that aim to reduce such incidents within their premises. Following the prevalence of falls in the hospital medical-surgical sections, this change project will focus on determining strategies of reducing their occurrences to increase patient recovery through a sub-committee that comprise of registered nurses and other assistive personnel.

First, the change process project will be conducted in a hospital that is comprised of a medical-surgical unit that performs diverse surgical operations. The preferred health institution meets the threshold because it has recorded fall cases among patients in the surgical unit within the last four months. Similarly, the medical institution has a management board that is committed to reducing falls in the surgical unit to avoid injuries and deaths. Besides competent management, the organization has quality infrastructure and experts who are committed to reducing falls among patients who undergo surgery. For instance, the hospital has both registered nurses and surgeons who perform various operations according to the diversity of infections presented by patients. The hospital also has surgical students who are continually learning to remedy falls and other medical cases that characterize surgical units.

For the change process to be successful, I require a mentor that will inspire me to commit to the project and excel in remedying challenges presented by falls in surgical units. In particular, my mentor in the change process project is my Tutor and supervisor due to the competence and sacrifice she makes to ensure students in their diverse medical projects. The Tutor has been in the medical practice for over ten years as she explores various medical concerns as far as surgery is concerned (Marquis & Huston, 2017). Besides lecturing surgical students on the importance of managing falls in surgical unites, the supervisor has also excelled in writing diverse publications that influence safety in medical centers.

The rationale for choosing the professor as a mentor is attributed to her commitment and competence in the medical surgery industry. Specifically, the professor’s expertise in the surgical confines of the medical sector makes her the best choice to consult as far as falls are concerned. Similarly, the experts, many years as a surgeon, makes her a valuable resource when deliberating on change projects concerning falls in the hospital (Wilson, 2017). I have also settled on the supervisor as a mentor because she understands current challenges in medical surgery and actions that the practitioner can undertake to remedy their prevalence.

Besides performing the change process as an academic requirement in education, I also have personal learning goals I aim to achieve during the practice and learning experience. The learning goals include:

Understanding the causes of falls in surgical units in various hospitals.

Determine the relationship falls in surgical units in medical institutions that record increases in such cases.

Research on the contributions that both patients and medical practitioners have in relation to the prevalence of falls in the surgical units.

Outline the roles that surgical experts have in need to reduce falls among surgical patients.

Determine ethical issues concerning the occurrence of falls and actions applied to manage their influences.

Determine how surgical units can be modified to reduce the prevalence of falls among surgical patients.

The prevalence of falls in medical-surgical units is becoming a major concern among medical practitioners following injuries and deaths associated with their occurrence. In particular, the change process on understanding falls in surgical units is committed to preventing their prevalence from increasing the patient recovery process. In particular, settling on my Tutor as my mentor in the project is important due to her competence in medical surgery. Further, the project is guided by my personal goals to understand and manage falls in surgical units.
