 An ANOVA test is used in determining whether or not the results of an experiment or research are significant (Statslectures, 2010). In this case, the ANOVA test would be efficient in determining whether or not cognitive behavioural therapy is effective as a method of treatment for young people dealing with depression. The test involves determining differences existing between two groups and using the results to make a decision on whether or not to reject the null hypothesis. Comparisons will be compared between patients who take behavioural cognitive therapy and those who do not. The other advantage of using the ANOVA test is the fact that the metric is flexible enough to accommodate large groups.

The choice of the test is determined by the hypothesis stipulated and the nature of the research problem at hand. In this case, we want to find the differences between patients who go through CBT and those who do not by using a random sample from a hospital selected from young patients with depression. The differences or similarities between the two groups will help make the decision on whether or not the method of treatment is suitable for the patients Tanner, 2016). It is important to note that the research is carried out under certain assumptions such as the fact that all patients who begin the treatment process have similar experiences in reducing depression whether or not they compete the treatment or not. We also hold all other factors constant and assume that the results obtained are as a result of the treatment and not any other secondary factors.

The design of the research would be determined by the sample size. In this case, using the total number of patients with depression in the region of study, I would use the Cochran’s formula to obtain an appropriate sample size of patients within a specific age group of patients. The patients will then be split into two groups of those going through CBT and those not going through the treatment. They are then observed for a period 6 to 8 months and changes, including attainment of clinical outcomes recorded. The data is then analyzed using a statistical software such as SPSS. Conclusions on whether or not to reject the stipulated null hypothesis are then made based on the results obtained from the analysis.

The hypothesis for the study would be non-directional since we are hypothesizing that performance, based on the CBT or lack of it will be better for the patients without predicting which group will perform better. This means that the test to be carried out will be a two tailed test. The null hypothesis will be states as “Depression levels are the same for young people going through CBT and those not going through CBT. The alternative hypothesis can be states as “Depression reduces for young people under CBT.
