Mission statements are often used as strategic management tools in organizations. Mission statements are formal documents written with the aim of capturing the enduring and unique purpose of an organization, its practices and values (Macedo, Pinho, & Silva, 2016). They give a sense direction and purpose to organization and legitimize their existence. The most important aspect of mission statements is identification of major services which accounts for approximately 92.6% (Kim E., Kim S., & Lee, 2015). Mission statements have a positive impact on organizational performance. This implies that healthcare organizations with better mission statements experience better organizational performance.

Mission statements promote excellence by indirectly enhancing commitment among the stakeholders. Employee commitment has a positive impact on performance; committed individuals especially in healthcare organizations provide quality care services to the patients (Macedo et al., 2016). In addition, employees feel as if the future of the organization is directly linked to theirs and they would be happy to make sacrifices to see the organization achieve its major purpose (Macedo et al., 2015). Clear mission statements inspire the stakeholders in that organization to continue doing what they do best in order to achieve the objective of the organization.

Prior to making a choice on which healthcare organization to attend, it is obvious that the first thing we search for is the mission. Individuals are only willing to attend to organizations where the services offered are a good value for their money (Kim E. et al., 2016). Precise, quality and all-inclusive mission statements build confidence among the already existing customers by assuring them their satisfaction is the organization’s key business. Similarly, new customers are encouraged to know that they chose the best healthcare organization with a defined direction and purpose. Clearly stated mission statements attract new clients which of course is an achievement to bot profit and non-profit organizations. In essence, mission statements reassure clients that the services provided are quality, reliable and with the best outcomes.
