There was a torrential rainfall that night, and the thunderstorms were too wild, they struck down trees in every corner of the surroundings. “Ella! Ella! Ella!” her mother yelled out her name at four o’clock in the morning. “You need to get ready for work, and I will not come up here to call you again,” her mother said in her high pitched voice. “Am already up mum” Ella replied, even though she was still under the covers of her warm blanket.

Dragging her feet, she reached out to feel where the lamp and the matchbox were and with the flicker of one matchstick the room filled with few rays of light. It was a routine for her because having electricity in her neighborhood was a luxury. She cleaned up her face from a bucket of water, brushed her teeth and then warmed up some tea from a stove. She then sat down on her bed to do her makeup, and by the time she was finished one of her eyebrows was higher than the other. She gave out a disappointed sigh because Ella knew if she corrected it, she would be late.

When she went to the door, it was pitch black, and she lit up her flashlight and nudged to the gate where she picked up a stick, which she would use to scare off the neighbor’s dogs if they started barking at her. The rain had now stopped, and she was dealing with the mud situation. Every time she took a step her gumboots got stuck and by the time she got to where the public means of transport was, her gumboots had too much mud. “Thank the heavens I had some extra shoes in my bag,” she said out loud.

Ella worked as a receptionist in a salon in the capital city. That day she did not have time to eat lunch since the salon was bustling. Around six o’clock in the evening, Damaris, her colleague came up to Ella and asked her, “What are your plans for this gorgeous and glorious, Friday night?” “Am going home Damaris,” she said smiling ear to ear exposing her perfect dental formula. Ella knew what Damaris meant by that question because she did it every other Friday hoping she would agree to join her.

After an hour of Damaris insisting, she finally agreed and off they went into the most famous nightclub in the town called Eye club. Damaris ordered some drinks, and when the waitress brought them, she said that they did not have to pay for them since the gentlemen around the corner had done it. Damaris seemed quite impressed, and she took a very long sip from her glass and then made a very loud belch which smelled like the eggs she had eaten earlier.

“You have not taken a sip yet,” Damaris stated. Ella gave her a flushed look as if she was scared. “Haven’t you had alcohol before?” Ella shook her head slowly feeling embarrassed, and Damaris gave off a wide grin. “Am happy to introduce you to it, now drink it all up,” she said laughing out loud. As the night progressed, the drinks kept coming, the music grew louder and faster, and before long, Ella was on her feet moving her body left, right and center.

Eventually, Ella decided to go up on the counter, and she started dancing vigorously, spilling everybody’s drinks while singing on the top of her lungs. Damaris was shocked when Ella took off her blouse and started flipping it on top of her head moving it rhythmically to the beat of the loud music playing. One of the waitresses told Ella to get down from the counter, she agreed calmly, and she sat down next to Damaris on the table. She wore her blouse and took a full glass of beer.

Before Damaris knew it, Ella ran after the waitress who had told her to get down, and she started punching her in the face. The waitress could not defend herself because Ella had a couple of pounds more than her. Most of the people in the club came to the scene; some tried to pull Ella off the waitress while others cheered Ella on to continue fighting.

Suddenly there were sirens from around the block, and the cops came in to find Ella still pulling on the waitress’s hair. They pulled her back forcefully and put handcuffs on her and headed for the door. The waitress’s face had too much blood, and this was the same case to Ella’s white blouse. Damaris could not shut her mouth because she was in shock as she watched Ella bend her head to get into the police car.
