There are a number of contemporary issues which have been seen to affect the society. Many agents have come up to try and bring solutions to these problems. One of the social challenges that are affecting the society is drug abuse and alcohol addiction. It is for this reason that this letter of intent is written. I am writing to seek your support concerning the menace of drug abuse in our community. Drug abuse is a social problem both in the United States and globally. In the US, it is estimated that 65.7 percent of persons 12 and older took alcohol in 2012, 13.5 percent smoked marijuana, and 17.8 percent testified consuming illegal drugs. In their lifetime, 81 percent of those interviewed testified consumption of alcohol, 44 percent said they used marijuana, and 48.8 percent had used illicit drugs (National Institute on Drug abuse, 2015, p.12). Drug abuse has affected the youth, as many of them have dropped out of college while others have been taken to rehabilitation centers to get help and assistance from this; it is evident that there is loss of workforce and expenditure by the government to try to help the affected people in the society.
Problem Description
The most important social variable that determines drug abuse for an individual is parenting. The changes that are seen in the long hours that parents go to work, the change in family structures, and the fact that more parents go to work all contribute to the issues that are found in the society, and which have contributed to drug abuse. Social interactions are inevitable in workplaces, schools, and communities. The social environment is, therefore, a major determinant of drug abuse. Through daily associations, people, especially the youths, influence each other into taking drugs.

Global Impact
Cases of drug abuse are prevalent in Iceland, Finland, Denmark, the United States, and Sweden. The commonly abused drug in these countries is Marijuana while Opioids are mainly used in Sweden and Denmark (Simonsen, 2015, p.177). Globalization has influenced the dominance of this social problem. The global context has contributed to the rise in drug abuse in the United States. This is brought about by the competition in the job market. Most jobless people dwell in hopelessness and seek solace in alcohol and drugs (Ghodse, 2016, p. 22). The Interactionist Perspective can best explain the global impact of drug abuse. The theory holds that all social practices are a result of the human interaction (Rubington& Weinberg, 2015, p.45). The similarities and differences in the global and local sphere are fostered by the drug abuse culture already established in the areas.
Potential Solution
This social problem can be curbed by implementing all laws that govern illegal drugs’ sell and use. This can be coupled with having more accessible and affordable rehabilitation centers for addicts (National Institute on Drug abuse, 2015, p.20). The method will be successful since illegal drugs will not be readily available in the market. Additionally, undesired influenced will reduce by having the addicts rehabilitated.
