Theories are developed to help understand human performance behavior nonetheless ethical theories are founded on principles that govern decision making processes. However, the ethical theories are subdivided into various categories, and this essay aims at supporting utilitarianism as the most valuable method for both personal and professional ethics. Utilitarianism is the capacity to foresee consequences regarding a decision made as it draws its strength from choices made that reap more benefits compared to that of fewer benefits. It is usually subdivided into two: act and law utilitarianism. This is further explained by understanding that the law based decisions seek to provide fairness and justice to all, unlike the act based decisions which are designed to offer benefits to all regardless of individual feelings or approval by the society. It is crucial to note that despite its implications on individuals, utilitarianism focuses on achieving the maximum good.

To give a better understanding consider an example of a company that offers services at a fee; perhaps an airline company, which offers first-class, business class and economy class services. All individuals pay a different fee and receive different services based on their financial capacity. The higher fees charged for the business and first-class services gives the company more profit as the economy class offers more opportunities for customers to fly. Therefore, this essay finds that the deontological theory fails to be applicable in the real world. The theory focuses in judging whether an action is right or wrong and this, in turn, makes some actions morally wrong despite having good intentions. A good example is when a man kills in order to offer protection to his family. From the theory’s perspective, the action is wrong despite the fact that it was for a greater good. In conclusion utilitarianism concurs that the end justifies the means.
