WHO launched a new classification named ICD-11 in May 2019 and this coding system was to take effect from January 2020. The new coding system is an improvement of ICD-10 and comes along with many benefits.

One of the benefits that come along with this classification system is simplicity. The new system is easier for the health professionals to use and this means that there is likelihood of improved compliance from health care professionals (WHO,2020). Improved compliance will result in more diseases being captured which will be a big advantage to the health care system as classification of a disease is the first step of combating it.

Secondly, the improved classification system recognizes traditional medicine which is an added advantage to the healthcare system in general because traditional medicine complements the standard health care and this means that conditions will be better managed with the combination of the two.

The new coding system also captures antimicrobial resistance which will make it possible for physicians to approach diseases with drug resistance in a better manner. Drug resistance has become a big problem currently and with this coding system, the doctors will be in a prime position to know which conditions have developed resistance and treat accordingly.

The new classification system has provisions for identifying unhealthy work patterns in our hospitals and hence allows for correctional measures to be taken in time. This will help reduce cases of occupational hazards and also improve flow of work which means better patient management.

In summary, the new WHO classification system-ICD 11 promises to bring more benefits to the healthcare system as mentioned above and this will mean better management of conditions and an overall improvement of the health care system. It is a welcome move and physicians worldwide should embrace it in a bid to make the world a better place.
