Idea Presentation in Relation to Marine Corps

The idea presented in the following paragraphs highlights the “Why” concepts of the two videos, “How great leaders inspire action” and “First why and then trust”. According to Simon Sinek, “ People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it .” This is the slogan of the leadership guru. In his talk, Sinek observes and analyzes the Write brothers, Martin Luther King Jr. and Apple based on the reasons why they succeeded in getting followers. These were the thinkers who on the other hand inspired Sinek to his chosen path of leadership . In his talk, we notice that his incident is derived from the military sphere, United States Marine Corps. Sinek has been drawn to the United States Marine Corps due to the captivating team dynamics it entails. It epitomizes the riskiest theater in which Sinek could assess two essential elements. In his “First why and then trust”, the “why” element is corporation derived to achieve corporation. He states that organization functionality, in this case USMC is similar to that of the human body functionality. Sinek attracts parallels between fundamental of the behavior of human and its importance to contemporary business culture by use of his training based on ethnography to good effect.

Ideas I Came Up With To Impact Change to the Command Climate in My Unit

According to Sinek, for the past 60 000 years of the existence of Homo sapiens, nothing much has experienced change. Therefore there is the need to feel secure and safe for corporation and trust to occur as evident in USMC. I came up with the concept of team work to influence change to the command climate in my unit which I named “Why are we winning” . The reason why my team is excellent is because they have incorporated communication skills as opposed to silence, confidence instead of fear, selflessness at the expense of individualism and accountability in every activity they carry out. This has impacted change to the command climate in “ Why are we winning .” The name of the unit is in itself a provocation of the reasons we are winning. It ensures my team’s principles are at finger tips whenever they are about to or begin an activity. I like it more when I see members smile and shake hands with a part on the back saying, “ Why are we winning ?” In fact it is an anthem we keep mentioning weather at the fields of training or office. The safe feeling in my unit naturally put together our efforts, and that is why we naturally pool our talents to manage the dangers and capture the opportunities as the USMC does. The lack of feeling safe among members of a team is the effect of the natural reaction towards protecting ourselves from one another. But, Sinek demonstrates his point by using the example of a gate agent of an airline who keeps on instructing a passenger away from boarding the airplane too early. However, when asked the reason she must just have to talk to the person in such a serious manner, she replies that “Sir, if I do not stick to the rules, I am likely to lose my job or get into trouble!” Sinek highlights the cause and influence of such culture of fear, demonstrating that, “when you provide persons with a sphere of safety, people will naturally take care of one another, the client and the organization 1 . In my unit, individuals take care of each other hence they feel safe. But, when I push them to fear, they will naturally become individualistic and take care of themselves. To change in the command of climate, my team works on consultations among us based on situation, context, time and space with the understanding that not all rules are applicable in every encounter. In his “First why and then trust” Simon deliberates on the reasons why a company loses its trust and passion. Therefore, the survival of human beings (in this case) my unit, is dependent on the ability to surround oneself with those who believe what they too believe. My team have a common belief and value in their in their survival. Trust is depicted as a sense of shared beliefs and values which are important for team building. Thus trust is important play a major role in my team.

Relation of the Concept to today’s USMC

The leadership concept in Simon Sinek’s “How great leaders inspire action” relates to the USMC’s trust for each other by conceptualizing leadership skills 2 . The USMC is amazingly tight-knit and willfully trusting one another with their lives. In any Marine Corps mess, juniors eat first, followed in a climbing rank with the leader taking their meals last. The practice is not in any rulebook, but the marines conduct it because that is how they perceive leadership responsibility. Whereas a majority of people observe leadership as being powerful, regarding rank and privilege, USMC believe in true leadership which is the willingness to consider others’ needs above one’s 3 .

The leadership skills in the video are similar to what I already see in other organizations. These organizations put their priority on their people’s wellbeing, thus, their people provide everything they have to protect as well as improve the well-being of each other and the overall organization 4 . I would use the concept of passion and trust to develop a common belief and values which will assist me in building a team. The ideas to apply to my own command are the leadership skills though it incorporates characteristics and issues such as management acumen, authority and being in-charge 5 .

The difference I would make on my own is that leadership entails little concerning authority, the acumen of management as well as being in charge. The video inspires me by offering various ideas based on leadership and management, and providing me insights through examples of organizations and persons who have exemplary performed. These are multinational corporations and home-based businesses. Persons include Martin Luther King Jr. In my perspective, it does change the overall climate of the corps since I believed that even in the military corps adhere to the rules and follow ranks while performing duties. I can now manage a group discussion of our class to manage our tasks differently.

The idea follows the CMC’s idea of “reawakening” as the CMC do not offer promotions based on merit rather it promotes them on the basis that they are transformed into leaders once the Corporals reach above particular score. The concept can be applied to my unit since everyone in the class has varied insights. Our reading and deliberation on ideas are different such that there are those who grasp concepts at a higher level compared to others.

In conclusion, leadership skills are the key idea for managing for managing people and what they do while creating fear among them only destroy peaceful coexistence. It is important to develop mutual trust and passion among people for them to have a shared value and belief that steer how they are managed.
