Having genomics and genetics knowledge is essential to the nurses because it is the first step to ensure that they provide quality and informed care (Calzone et al., 2018). Considering that nurses are the main deliverers of genetics and genomics services, they ought to have this knowledge as they will be increasingly called to dispense these services. Therefore, this knowledge will aid them to provide personalized and competent healthcare.
My Clinical Experience Involving Genetics
My clinical experience involved a five-year-old girl who had fox-1 gene mutation. In the process, I had to identify the effects that the condition caused on the girl. I found that she failed to control her body movements and had a slowed speech. Genetics knowledge helped me to identify these effects and the path to follow when administering an amicable solution. I successfully made both diagnostic and therapeutic decisions that were critical in helping the young girl.
Ethical Concerns with Genomic Medicine
The familiarity of genomic medicines is posing great ethical issues. One of the most significant ethical issues that have been apparent amid the adoption of genomic medicine is patient confidentiality. Genomic medicine involves patients’ personal information which is supposed to be private. This is an implication that healthcare providers should be careful when handling patients’ information to ensure confidentiality. This is because healthcare providers are given the responsibility to guarantee information privacy and should only share with the patient’s consent.
