Increased prevalence of hypertension is a global health issue of concern that has adversely affected my community, with many individuals being diagnosed with the disease every day. Hypertension is a challenge at the global and community level due to the associated mortality and morbidity and increased financial costs. According to Mills et al. (2016), a significant problem linked with an increased prevalence of hypertension at both levels is disparities in hypertension knowledge and awareness, management, and control. The use of health technology in managing the disease has proven beneficial in reducing its prevalence and improving patient health outcomes.

Electronic health records (EHR) help determine the distribution of the disease within the community, and surveillance data that I have previously used include healthcare provider diagnosis, laboratory information, and prescribed drugs. Through EHR, I can pull patient characteristics and provider actions. This provides information on the frequency of disease events and the common risk factors associated with the disease within the community. EHR provides systematic and standardized data that can improve the quality of healthcare provided and the implementation of prevention activities (Perlman et al., 2017).

Although a challenging aspect, it is essential to create collaborative environments to help reduce the risk of complications associated with hypertension and improve management outcomes. Successful collaborative efforts with various professionals, including nurse informaticists, can slow the growing epidemic of hypertension. Nurse informaticists can use their expertise to identify patterns of the disease, which healthcare providers can use to improve treatment. Universal links to administrative databases, laboratory, pharmacy, and continued evolution of medical informatics will continue to increase the success rate in the management of hypertension.
