Developing a mission, vision, and values of an organization are vital for its strategic direction because the foundation of an organization is laid upon its values which are clearly illustrated by the vision and the mission helps in the implementation (Less MacLeod, 2016). The mission and vision of a company are integral to its strategy because they are used to define the future goals and the operational tactics of an organization.

The mission statement states the goals of a business and outlines the strategy it will use to achieve those goals. Its focus is to describe where the organization is and the tactics it wishes to use to attain its goals (Mullane, 2002). For example, a healthcare organization might state its mission as “we work selflessly and tirelessly to provide our clients the best healthcare, to inspire hope, and contribute to the well-being of our patient.”

Unlike the mission which is more of tactical attributes, the vision statement focus on the future of an organization. It provides the strategic direction the company is supposed to take to achieve its objectives (Taiwo, Lawal, & Agwu, 2016). For example, a healthcare organization would state its vision as, “this healthcare facility will provide the best experience to its clients and be a leader in oncology nursing care and services both regionally and internationally.”

The values are also referred to as the guiding principles and they serve to develop and nurture the most appropriate behaviors in an organization. The values such as professionalism, integrity, honesty, and respect are the building blocks of an institution. The values provide the necessary guiding principles on how an institution will attain its objective. The values are the principles that determine the strategic direction a business takes and it helps in arriving at the desired destination (Kaplan, Norton, &Barrows, 2008). For example, the values of this healthcare organization are to attain the highest professional, ethical, honesty, and integrity in the delivery of healthcare to our clients. Therefore, it is impossible for an organization to have a strategic direction without a mission, vision, and values.
