Q1.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWFJ) in partnership with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) established an initiative on Future of Nursing in 2008. The action led to the convening of a committee, which released the Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health in 2010. The report offers insight on the need to advance the nursing institution in the new health care department. Shortly after implementation, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) partnered with RWFJ to launch the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action in an effort aimed at directing the implementation of the recommendations of the report. The coordination of the implementation process was through the Center to Champion Nursing in America (CCNA) that is nationally based. By using the state action coalition, CCNA can advance the stated goals. The New York State Action Coalition (NYSAC) was one of the few institutions designated among the five Initial Pilot Action Coalitions to develop the recommendations from the report.

Q2.

Importance of the Report

Nursing Practice

The call is for nurses to practice to the fullest of their extent. For such a fit to happen, federal and state actions are necessary for updating and standardizing the scope-of-practice regulations to utilize the nurse’s capacity and education fully. The nurse seems to be moving away from the patients as witnessed from the advancement in technology, especially in acute care settings. Furthermore, the ability and responsibility of nurses to work, disseminate and reconceptualize roles have shifted and no longer works to bridge the existing gap between the nurses and the patients. The nurse no longer carries out the duties they were supposed to, preferably, patients seem to interact more with the available machines. Based on different studies, most scholars call for nurses to develop into coaches, care coordinators, and primary caregivers. For the achievement of this feature, a conducive environment out to be created that focuses solely on nurse’s full employment whether in hospitals or communities (Ogbolu et al., 2017; Mockenhaupt & Woodrum, 2015)

Nursing Education

Nurses are supposed to reach higher educational levels and training. The achievement of higher education learning systems is possible through improved training systems that emphasize progressive academic processes. The nursing system is changing, and it is mandatory that those who take charge are efficient in their education before receiving their licenses. Most people have gained interest in the nursing profession as witnessed in the increased number of applicants in baccalaureate programs in the past years. As a result of the influx, most students have been turned away due to insufficient nurse faculty placements, increased research in the field that has resulted in the need for further learning processes and finally, the growing gap in the teaching processes. Education is mandatory, and it should serve to provide the students with sufficient tools to perform better in their workplace ( Mockenhaupt & Woodrum, 2015) . The recommendation from the report aims at helping the nurses procure better educational resources to further their craft.

Nursing Workforce Development

According to the report, nurses should be full partners whether with physicians or other health professionals. By including them in redesigning the health care system, they could offer more insight for improvement considering they are always at the center of operation. Regardless of the position, whether in education, administrative positions, or health policies, nurses offer a first-hand experience to the patient, which makes them the best informants for any development in the health industry. By including them in the leadership position, the recognition translates more in the reconceptualization of roles where to nurses, the option of shaping the industry falls upon them instead of waiting for the change without the power to do anything (Ogbolu et al., 2017) . Although the healthcare system calls for competency and knowledge endowment, no one can ever have all the answers; instead, reliance on other parties to know one individual misses. The call from the report is to cultivate new allies that can help grow the industry.

Q3.

Interstate collaboration

The report advocates for nurses to fully partner with physicians and health professionals in the creation of a robust portfolio. Different rules and regulations govern different states in both practice and education. By promoting regional collaboration, the flow of knowledge becomes a guarantee, which serves to benefit both states. The successful interstate partnership can be through domestic exchange programs where students and nurses from different states visit collaborating states to learn from experts in the field. As stated above, it is impossible for a single person to know everything about the health care system; however, through collaboration and educational sessions, people can better understand situations. The collaboration also helps the policy committee figure out the best policies depending on how well implemented healthcare policies are in the visited states ( Mockenhaupt & Woodrum, 2015)

Q4.

New York State Initiative

As one of the states selected to autopilot the Future for Nursing Campaign, New York has made significant progress in the past years. Considering the report offers nurses an opportunity to know the necessity to provide the best health care to the citizens, most nurses have taken the initiative to adopt the recommendations. The NYS Action Coalition executives have promoted the idea of involving people that are not related to the nursing profession including business leaders due to their consent to fund the model. A real momentum has been created spearhead by different organizations as well as focusing on recommendations on aspects with the most potential achievement rates. Furthermore, the state has advanced practical legal reforms that have served to remove the scope-of-practice barriers and liberating nurse practitioners (New York Action Coalition, 2018).

Other State Initiatives

Establishment of subcommittees that help strategize in supporting increase baccalaureate and doctoral degrees RNs and improved the infrastructure of the graduates and students aim to prioritize education. The development of partnerships between private and public educational institutions has also helped the state offer a dual associate, baccalaureate, and doctoral degree programs. As a result, more nurses are seeking to further their education, which helps grow the knowledge base of the medical practitioners. Moreover, pending legal certification in the state are aimed at ensuring nurses perform their best supported by the legal system in the state. Different discussions highlight the fact that the state is advancing steadily towards the achievement of a future where nurses work to perfect their craft as well as give the citizens the best care possible (New York Action Coalition, 2018).

Conclusion

As discussed above, the Future of Nursing report and campaigns aims at helping to make the population safer. The nursing industry is a significant cog in the American economy where failure to of the institution is bound to affect the economy significantly. However, for nurses to perform better, necessary regulations are necessary for the event of protecting the lives of the patients; however, the rules should not be used to politicize and make nurses fail at their work, instead, the legal system should be used to help them get maximum employment. Themes of practice, education and performance aim to improve the industry grow hence it is essential for states to support the incentive.
