The rationale for Selecting Mission and Vision Statements

The mission and vision statements were evaluated according to the key components of mission and vision statements. Although mission and vision statements vary from organization to organization, they all comprise the same key components. A mission statement should contain the target market, the geographical area of operation, reason for survival, growth, organization’s values and beliefs, and the expected public image. It should also inspire employees and keep them engaged in the organization. A good mission statement should have the above mentioned components and those that do not meet the above mentioned criteria are considered weak.

A vision statement is the basis for a mission statement. A good vision statement should give a strategic direction, which is the point of action for the mission and the organization’s goals (Steiner, 2008). It should give a view of what accompany or an organization wants to become in the future. In addition, it should outline the future expectations of an organization by defining the organization’s long term goals and an unconditional direction of the company’s path (Steiner, 2008). The mission and mission statements were selected because they meet the above explained criteria and appropriate for the health care organization.

In addition, the mission and vision statements is the emphasis it directs toward the enhancement of population health and wellbeing. Population health focuses on people. Improving health to the community makes it possible to lift the diverse aspects of society. Healthier populations can accomplish many things as opposed to ailing populations. The spending on therapeutic interventions by patients declines significantly. Emphasis on population health supposes improvements in health, which emanate from advances in preventive care, exercise, and diet (Bouhali, Mekdad, Lebsir, & Ferkha, 2015). The community also expects better care. Many people spend significant amounts of their earnings on the delivery of healthcare from laboratory tests to physicians to prescriptions. Medical science needs to avail of commensurate treatment. As such, it becomes increasingly essential to offer better care that leads to the satisfaction of patients on individual levels while at the same time seeing that the entire society realizes better health as care costs decline due to improved efficiencies.

Strengths of Mission and Vision Statements

The chosen mission statement is simple and clear. It provides information on the organization’s focus, target market, and the reason for its survival. It provides focus of what the organization does. The organization’s focus and purpose from the mission statement is to enhance the health of the population as well as its well-being while the organization’s target market is the communities it serves. A good mission statement ought to guide employees in identifying what an organization does and make appropriate decisions related to the organization’s focus (Steiner, 2008). The fact that the mission clear, focused, identifies its target market and purpose can help ensure that employees do not drift away from the organization’s course.

Another important strength of the selected mission statement is that it is emotionally appealing. For health professionals, a deep commitment as stated in the mission statement to patients is key. A good mission statement should establish an emotional connection instead of being a more scientific and plain statement (Steiner, 2008). Words such as commitment and service are effective in tapping into the psychology health professionals. Words such as commitment show the organization’s values and culture. The vision statement is motivational which a great strength is. It aims at giving a unique experience in each encounter. This motivates employees in the organization to deliver the best quality care to the target market.

Weaknesses of Mission and Vision Statements

The vision and mission statements that were not selected lack in key components of a vision and mission statement. “ To improve health by providing high-quality care” as a mission statement does not define the target and is not inspiring. Despite the fact that it identifies how health will be improved, it does not establish that emotional connection. Both vision statements do not adequately support the mission statements that they should. They are limited because they only aim at offering the hospital’s services within the county. Both the vision and mission statements do not also meet most of the criteria of a mission and vision statement and lack in most key components. The mission statements are also lacking in reflection of the organization’s values. A mission statement should show the beliefs and values of the organization and reflect its culture also (Steiner, 2008). Words that show beliefs and values such as commitment among others are lacking in the mission statements. As a result, an organization with such a mission statement may not be able to instill the desired culture and values in its employees. This in turn has a negative effect on performance.

When it comes to Stevens District Hospital, the mission and vision statements are crucial to driving the strategic plan for the institution. These have provided the organization with a means of directing its organizational strategy by offering a purpose and goals, which are the crucial components of the strategic plan that Stevens District Hospital has set. The vision and vision statements have also outlined the primary audience of the hospital together with what the patients regard as vital in their healthcare delivery needs. With the identification of the elements, the executives at the organization have established a more systematic approach that has allowed it to realize its mission during the short-tern, and vision during the long-term (Gurley, Peters, Collins, & Fifolt, 2015). Furthermore, the mission and vision statements have allowed Stevens District Hospital to outline performance metrics and standards depending on what it wishes to achieve. They also employees with specific goals they need to realize, promoting productivity and efficiency in the organization. Regarding the vision and mission statements, they are vital for organizations and their employees when it comes to realizing the organizational strategy. They are also applicable to external stakeholders, including patients, suppliers, and partners (Johnsen, 2015). Hence, they also serve as public relations tools for engaging key audience segments in line with helping an organization to establish partnerships with like-minded enterprises.
