Jenson, H., Maddux, S., Waldo, M. (2018). Improving oral care in hospitalized non-ventilated patients: Standardizing products and protocol. MEDSURG Nursing 27(1), 38-45
The problem
Poor oral health leads to increased risks of infection, and subsequently, non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia. Implementation of regular, high quality oral care is often neglected by nursing staff because of resource shortages, limited time, and gaps in staff knowledge.

Purpose
To determine whether staff education, creating an oral care protocol, and altercations to bedside oral care techniques improved oral care in patients who were not ventilated.
Hypothesis
Educating nurses on the importance of regular or routine oral care and altering various tools to the bedside improves the frequency of oral care
Significance of the research
Poor oral health is linked to higher rate of Non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP), and the significance of the study was to establish how oral health care can be improved to prevent the acquisition of NV-HAP.
Type of study: Quantitative
The research analyzed a sample of patients and used quantitative tools to analyze the results, that is, SPSS
