There are several risks to patients in the healthcare settings when informatics technology is not used. For example, the risk of medication error arises due to the inability to communicate patient data quickly in a readable format. Informatics technology enhances communication between nurses, which enhances medication safety. Reduced patient safety is also another risk related to the absence of informatics technology because technology can be used to alert or remind patients or nurses about medications, track and report diagnostic or laboratory results and provide extra patient information, such as allergies and other complications to support patient care. There is also the risk of increased medical care costs in the absence of informatics technology as technology allows patients to visit the hospital less often, remind them of the required medications or appointments, and allow them to share information with care providers remotely.
The human-computer interface (HCI) includes the actions, dialogues, processes that a person uses to interact with a computer. HCI focuses on computer technology, software, people, and how they influence each other (Shortliffe & Cimino, 2013). HCI enables nurses to access patient data, which improves patient care outcomes. For example, a nurse can use an electronic health record to enter or retrieve patient information such as laboratory test results.
