Inter-professional collaboration is one of the most effective methods of improving patient care in situations where patients have complex and/or chronic diseases. As a result, it is necessary to identify the essentials of proper collaboration. The article in review considers the factors necessary for effective inter-professional collaboration in primary care settings. This review critiques the literature review in this paper, thereby analysing the theoretical framework on which the paper is founded.

The literature review was conducted on eight electronic databases that included information on nursing, medicine, psychology, health science and public health among others. It is therefore a qualitative study sampling various other articles in this area. 

Do the researchers examine relationships or patterns of association among variables or concepts? Does the report imply the possibility of a causal relationship? 

The relationships are firmly established in this literature review. This literature review covered not just one area of medicine, but multiple areas. This means that the literature review would cover the entire scope of medicine, care and public health; thereby providing a full view on different applications of inter-professional collaboration. Moreover, it would reveal that the factors necessary for effective collaboration in this paper are widely researched in all areas of medicine. Further, due to the multiple terms used to refer to collaboration, they were all included within the search to improve the parameters. Therefore, terms such as ‘team’ and ‘collaborat-’ were used to improve the outcomes for the qualitative search undertaken. This ensured that all forms of collaborative practice within the care environment were included. Thereafter, the factors were associated with effectiveness in primary care settings and high quality of care. 

Again, multiple inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied on the results on the databases. Some of inclusion criteria included any research contemplating collaborative practice within primary data, primary research on the subject, collaboration within professional educational context and the English language. On the other hand, research articles would be excluded based on collaboration between professionals in healthcare and patients, when collaboration was not inter-disciplinary, collaboration where it involved non-professional parties and where the analysis was not done within primary care settings. In this case, the inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to further filter the results found during the search for collaborative practice papers. This ensured that there were proper parameters in place to ensure that the results obtained reflected the objectives of the review. Indeed, the pieces of literature sampled in this study reflected the objectives of the research, which was to determine factors necessary for successful collaboration in care settings between inter-disciplinary professionals. 

Are key concepts clearly defined, both conceptually and operationally? 

Key concepts regarding collaborative approaches to primary care settings were applied. The concept of collaborative practice was succinctly explained as the operation of two or more classes of health professionals in dealing with primary care setting challenges with the patient. Moreover, collaborative practice was linked with other healthcare concepts such as teamwork and collaboration between professionals. The inclusion and exclusion criteria enabled further explanation for the concepts to exclude instances where collaboration was not between two classes of professionals. These include cases where the collaboration was between patients or same-practice professionals.

In conclusion, the literature review was done in a manner that ensured that only the relevant material would be included in finding the factors necessary for effective inter-disciplinary collaboration. At first instance, the literature review identified databases in which diverse information would be found on the topic of interest. Thereafter, inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to filter non-relevant information and only maintain what was needed. As a result, this paper adequately made sure that only relevant information would be utilized, thereby effectively describing a descriptive qualitative paper. Subsequently, this literature review was found to be adequate in its scope and efficacy.
