Health care providers need to promote a change in the organizational culture by ensuring that they have interprofessional collaboration. Collaboration is important in creating working relationships among different health care providers. Some of the elements of collaboration include respect, trust, partnerships, shared decision-making, and teamwork. One of the ways to promote collaboration is by focusing on nursing action on iCARE. The emergency department is the work setting that has been chosen and it makes use of various interprofessional teams. Some of the teams that work in the emergency department include the support staff, healthcare staff, ambulance paramedics, and the diagnostic stuff. All these teams make use of various professional members such as emergency registrars, emergency physicians, nursing practitioners, medical officers, and patient care coordinators. This paper discusses various ways that iCARE can change nursing actions and improve the quality of care in the emergency department. 

Compassion 

Empathy and compassion are critical elements to ensure that there is effective collaboration in health care. One nursing action that could contribute to compassion in the emergency department is simply through the nursing practitioner showing concern over the distress, pain, and suffering that the patient is going through. The nurses should work together as a team and show that they are concerned about the situation of the patient. The nursing professional team can acknowledge the condition that the patient is going through and show that they understand their suffering. The benefit of having the entire nursing team showing compassion is that it will improve the quality of care. Patients will feel that they have been understood and that the different professionals are working to improve their condition.

Compassion collaborative care (CCC) is a nursing action that can contribute to compassion in the emergency department. Through the use of compassionate collaborative care, nurses will be able to work with families, patients, staff, and support one another (Lown et al., 2016). The nursing team can work closely with family members and engage in shared decision making. This will ensure that both the family members, nursing practitioners, and the patients feel that the right decision has been made to foster better health outcomes. The emergency department deals with individuals that have been admitted on short notice and are not sure about their health conditions or health outcomes. Working closely with the family members will ensure that the families and patients have consistent support from the nursing practitioner even in difficult times. 

Advocacy 

Advocacy can be described as the process of improving patient safety and preventing any form of harm. Nursing practices that promote advocacy include questioning the quality of care when there is a misalignment between the medical team and patient-family goals. As the nurse works in the team involving various health care practitioners and the family, they need to understand that they act as advocates for the patient and should represent the needs and concerns of the patient in the different teams. The emergency department involves nurses working in an environment that requires fast response and action. Nurses that adhere to advocacy will ensure that all the fast responses are done after taking into consideration various decisions and elements that should improve patient safety. 

Resilience 

The emergency department has a difficult work environment and it is important that nurses develop resilience in their work. One way to build resilience is by incorporating teamwork in the nursing practice. Emich (2018) analyzed the use of teamwork in different case studies and found that it improved the performance and job satisfaction of healthcare providers. Nurses can work as a team by working closely with other healthcare professionals such as members in their nursing team or other members such as medical officers and physicians. 

A supportive workplace culture in the emergency department should be done so that nurses know that they can rely on the support of other healthcare professionals. The emergency department is sometimes understaffed and team members may have to work longer than the expected hours. Nursing practitioners can create a sense of community and this will be advantageous to improving patient outcomes. Resilience will ensure that nurses are available to offer help to patients at all times and this will improve the continuity of care (Jones & Johnstone, 2019). 

Evidence-Based Practice 

Different nurses are equipped differently in terms of their knowledge. Evidence-based practice will ensure that there is an efficient and effective way to share knowledge among different healthcare professionals. According to Arndottir (2015), evidence-based practice through the use of knowledge sharing is critical to closing the gap between proper diagnosis and the right treatment choices. Collaboration in knowledge sharing will involve the sharing of knowledge among the different healthcare teams. Individuals that have had a significant amount of experience in the emergency department should be able to share their knowledge and experience with individuals that are relatively new to the field. The emergency department requires fast response and there is a need for all team members to share their knowledge in cases when it is difficult to know the specific problem of patients. Sharing knowledge will improve patient care outcomes. 

Summary 

The incorporation of iCARE to support various professional teams in the emergency department should improve the quality of care, continuity of care, and patient outcomes. The emergency department can be quite challenging and it is critical that different teams and team members work together. Compassion will be used among different nursing teams and family members in the decision-making process. Advocacy ensures that all members of the nursing team are advocates of the patient and that any decisions made by the families should be done for the benefit of the patient. The emergency department can be challenging and resilience through teamwork and a supportive work environment should improve patient outcomes. Evidence-based practice will be applied through the use of knowledge-sharing to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
