My attendance at the interprofessional practice education (IPE) event with UNSTHC was largely characterized by interactions with students from other fields, like pharmacy and health administration. IPE is an activity that occurs when students from different professions in health and social care learn together. IPE acts as a part of professional training, which aims to support collaborative practice for the provision of patient-centered care. During the event, I learned about other fields in healthcare, like pharmacy, while also learning from the other students in attendance. By enabling us to learn with each other, this IPE event enabled my increased understanding of the different professional backgrounds that exist in the industry. I was also able to engage in a comprehensive assessment of different ways professionals could work together to improve existing services.
I was able to understand the need for partnerships and collaboration with others in the event. This increased understanding was facilitated by a concept known as interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP). ICP is a procedure structured by communication and the making of decisions to enable the influence of grouped knowledge and skills. As a student, I gleaned that to be an essential actor within the concept of ICP, some of the skills I needed to develop and strength included being more responsible, accountable, cooperative, and assertive, as well as learning to trust those who were around me. In the future, I aim to be an effective partner within an interprofessional team designed to provide better care in the healthcare industry. Based on my experience of the event, it is clear that IPE is an important component of successful healthcare teams. This approach's significance is based on its ability to increase the preparation of students to provide patient care within a collaborative environment. This preparation results in experience and effective professionals who can work with others to increase healthcare services' quality.
