Iran’s form of government

It is important to understand that a dictatorship form of government is one where a given political entity or leader has and exercises absolute power unilaterally. On the other hand, a democracy is the government for the people by the people. In a democracy, the citizens exercise power directly or delegate it to representatives who are political leaders. This power is normally delegated through an election. These two forms of government are quite distinct. Example of a dictatorship government is North Korea whereas democracy is present in the United States and Britain. Based on these descriptions, it is possible to classify the form of government in Iran currently.

The Shah of Iran was dethroned in the year 1979 and the Islamic Republic established successively. Currently, the citizens of Iran do elect their president. However, there is a powerful religious leader and a governing body, which can reverse the electoral decision of citizens in electing a president. Considering these facts, Iran can be classified as a weak democracy.

Iran’s form of government is weak democracy. It can be seen as democratic because the citizens are given the chance of participating in election of the president. However, it becomes a weak democracy because there is a body of clerics known as the Guardian Council, which approves all the candidates vying for political office hence narrowing the scope of the choices from which citizens choose. Moreover, there is a powerful religious leader who can even overturn the decision of the citizens.

The governmental characteristics of Iran show that it operates closer to a democracy. Even in the mature democracies like the United States of America, there the Supreme Court that can overturn the decision of the electorate, who are citizens, if petitioned and convinced sufficiently. Moreover, mature democracies have electoral commissions that vet and approve candidates vying for political offices hence narrow down the choice scope.
