My Motivation
I have admired nurses ever since when I was young. In their careers, nurses fulfill their challenging roles despite the various types of pressure that they work under. The passion for caring for patients greatly influenced my decision to choose a nursing career. I have always been so passionate about collaborative and autonomous care of the community. One other factor that drove me to choose the nursing career is several specializations one can choose from. With a variety of specialties to choose from, it is easy for me to find what suits me best. My home country Sierre Leone has always had a shortage of nurses. The enormous demand for nurses there presented an opportunity for me to give back to my community in the future. The endless learning opportunities presented by the nursing career has sharpened my ability to provide quality care to patients I encountered in clinical settings. I, therefore, feel confident that the nursing career was the best niche for me.
My Experiences
One day, when I was only seventeen years old, I was sitting on the back seat of a public bus in Sierre Leone. I had no idea that the rest of my life would be changed forever following a severe crash that was about to happen. A short time later, I woke up in the hospital with severe abdominal pain. I was told I had been transported to the hospital by ambulance. Just before my discharge, a family friend who worked as a nurse in a private hospital insisted that the staff at the local hospital that I was admitted, to obtain one more X-ray. Fortunately, the x-ray aided in identifying that my appendix had ruptured and I had to be rushed to surgery. This was my first experience to witness the impact of a nurse on medical care.

The next exposure to nursing was when I was helping my grandmother, who was a traditional midwife, as a patient care assistant at a local community hospital. The more I worked there, the more urge I had to start a path in the nursing career. At that time, I was drawn to the role of a midwife. These experiences made me reflect on the role nurses played in my health and my community. I was motivated to choose a career in nursing as I thought it would be a rewarding career path. Therefore, I continued to work at the local rehabilitation community center after high school before I went to college. I worked with many families and understood more about the nursing career and the needs of the community.
When my life path brought me to the United States, I started my career in nursing at Alvernia University’s Nursing Program. The program has presented me with diverse learning opportunities. I have learned the essential knowledge and developed critical interpersonal skills required to be a nurse. My professors have not only motivated my path but also instilled more passion in my career choice.
In my second year of study in nursing, I had the opportunity to visit the hospital to practice my skills as an undergraduate nurse. The experience was overwhelming for me. The idea of seeing people in pain enhanced my passion for helping them. For that reason, I was willing to always stay by the supervisor to ensur e that I learned new skills each day. The expertise and capacity of the nursing practitioners in the facility motivated me to enhance my practicing skills. My experience where a nurse saved my life made me realize the importance of nurses and appreciate their efforts. The act has contributed to my overwhelming passion and urges to help others overcome their challenges. I have learned the need to ensure that I consider other people's problems. As a nursing practitioner, I treat my clients the same way that I would wish them to treat me if I were in the same position as them.
Ethical and Moral Values
Ethics guides our daily life. Most of the decisions and choices a person makes are based on ethics and morals. Several moral and ethical values have influenced the pursuit of my nursing career. The most important value for me, as it applies to my nursing career, is to give back to the community of underserved and underprivileged.
Ethics and morals are essential attributes for nurses. Nurses are professionals who respect values, which requires a commitment to ethics and morals. The fundamental ethical principles for nurses include the principles of justice, beneficence and nonmaleficence. Nurses are expected to display a high adherence to fidelity and accountability in inpatient care. Ethics and morals, therefore, play an essential role in enabling nurses to understand their purpose in health promotion and disease prevention. They influence how nurses deal with challenges that arise.
Alvernia University has much exerted a tremendous influence on my moral development. My role models – professors and nurses in clinical settings - have played a significant role in teaching me ethical behavior.
Empathy and caring are among the most critical moral and ethical values that have played a role in shaping my nursing experience. Nurses are required to treat patients with a high level of empathy and compassion. The two have helped me develop the ability to understand, be sensitive, as well as vicariously share in the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of the patient and the family at large. These values have enabled me to be respectful to patients and, at the same time, be sensitive to them, especially regarding my words and attitude. Besides, I have learned to listen to patients and ensure that I consider their wellbeing and interest during the entire process. As a nurse, it is my responsibility to uphold the confidence that gives patients and family hope and the possibility of getting well.
